Aneko: Another Inuyasha, is it? Wow. Well, this one popped into my head just an hour or so ago. And it's probably as clichéd as they come, but who can resist the inu-ears fic?
Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha.
Inuyasha: Keh. That's right.
Aneko: -Sigh- Kagome. If you will.
Kagome: Certainly. Inuyasha…
Inuyasha: Hmm?
:Kagome:…SIT!
Inuyasha: WHY YOU—!!
Soft As…
The campfire crackled merrily, casting deep shadows on their surroundings. The camp was filled with the sleepy quiet of night, as everyone lay asleep. For once, no one was keeping watch. Inuyasha and Miroku had deemed the area clear of all demons within a wide range, and there was no threat.
Unfortunately, Kagome seemed unable to sleep. She sat up in her sleeping bag, rubbing her arms against the chilly air. Everyone else slumbered peacefully on; even Inuyasha seemed to be asleep, as he leaned against a tree, tetsaiga leaning against his shoulder.
Kagome sighed, rubbing her eyes with her hands. She felt as wide awake as though it was the middle of the day. She couldn't sleep like this. She scanned the camp again, and her eyes stayed on a particular spot.
Inuyasha's ears flicked in his sleep.
Those ears.
She never had gotten a chance to touch them, without being shot at (the first time she arrived in this era) or shouted at (Inuyasha apparently didn't like it, she found out). They really did look so soft…
Making her decision, Kagome climbed resolutely out of her sleeping bag. She crept as quietly as she could over to the sleeping hanyou. She squinted at him, trying to make sure he was actually asleep. She waved a hand in front of his face, and even whispered his name a few times.
Finally satisfied, Kagome reached ever so slowly towards the ears. When she touched them, she was surprised.
They were softer and silkier than she had even imagined. She didn't even know how to describe it.
When she had first touched his ears, Inuyasha frowned in his sleep, looking a little angry. It took all she had to keep from bursting into laughter at the sight. He could even look grumpy in sleep. But then his face smoothed over, and once again, he slept peacefully.
A content smile passed over Kagome's face as she stroked his ears, and watched him. Everyone, even a defensive hanyou like Inuyasha, becomes somewhat defenseless in sleep. Their faces more open, easier to read. Softer.
Kagome's hand fell from the top of his head to playing with a lock of his hair. If only he would be this open with her in waking. If only they didn't fight over so many of the useless little things. If only he could see her in his eyes as much as he did Kikyo.
But if the world was made of with If onlys, then it would mean that people wouldn't get the chance to make mistakes and learn from them.
A yawn escaped Kagome's mouth. During those few precious minutes of watching him sleep, she had begun to get sleepy. Smiling, she crawled back to her sleeping bag and scooted in.
The last picture she saw before she closed her eyes was Inuyasha, his face soft in sleep.
Inuyasha blinked, waking quickly. He gave a small yawn, looking over at Kagome. He frowned. Keh. She's still asleep. The frown faded as he looked at her, though. Her face was so light in slumber…
His ear flicked, and Inuyasha frowned again. It felt almost like someone had…touched his ears…
Aneko: Ta-Dah!! You like? Hopefully… Ja, Sayonara.
