The "Orphan"
Prologue
Adelia Jane Smite stares out her window at downtown London, recounting the day's events in her head. First, that strange man in the bright yellow cloak came to visit her. He said his name was Professor Longbottom (what a name!) from a school called Hogwarts. He handed her her acceptance letter and told her that she was in fact a witch. A witch! Not that it was all that shocking. Adelia had always been strange compared to the other orphans. She asked the professor of any Smite's that had attended Hogwarts. He replied that he didn't know of any, but it could have been her mother that was her only magical parent or that both her parents were muggles, a word he used for non-magical folks. What an ugly name, Adelia had thought.
After Professor Longbottom had left, promising to pick her up in one week, so that she could purchase her supplies and board the train to Hogwarts, Adelia went to the orphanage's Headmistress to ask about how she had come to be in this place. Until now, she had been completely uninterested in the subject, believing that her parents were either dead or cowards. However, she was anxious to find out if she was a full-blooded witch or merely some accident. Adelia stalked into the Headmistress' office and demanded to be told about her parentage. The Headmistress, and elderly and patient woman, sighed and asked Adelia to hush down and take a seat as she pulled out her file. Adelia did as she was asked, though slightly annoyed that she had been hushed. Adelia twirled her blonde hair, a bit nervous. The Headmistress sat down at her desk and told Adelia all that had happened the night of her arrival:
"A tall man with white-blonde hair, very much like yours, and dressed all in black walked into my office at around ten, with you cradled in his arms. He claimed that he could not take care of you because of, ahem, your mother's "blood" as he put it. He didn't appreciate you being left on his doorstep, and deeply regretted meeting your mother… He said that when you were ready you would choose the, um, "right path." I suppose he went to this Hogwarts as well? Oh, I'm sorry, Adelia, I know this must be a lot to take in…"
Adelia continued to look out her window before finally retiring to bed. She knew her father must have been of the highest standard, and greatly awaited attending Hogwarts and making him proud.
