The Awakening
Listless... floating... care free...
It was peaceful and quiet. I didn't no where it was, nor did I care to know. All I knew was that it was safe and I liked it. The feeling of utter serenity is hard to describe, it was the only thing I knew. I was never hungry, never thirsty, just at ease. It was all I cared about—that is, until I woke up. Out of nowhere, a light appeared. I was taken aback, shocked, for this was the first time I had seen anything other than the black abyss in which I resided. I wanted to stay where I was, alone and relaxed, but the light beckoned to me like a wrapped present does to a child on Christmas morning (not that I knew what Christmas was at the time). As they say, curiosity killed the cat, and I stepped toward the light.
I opened my eyes to find myself in, well, I wasn't sure. In fact, I wasn't even fully awake. I felt like I was awake, but my body wasn't. The best I could do was open and close my eyes, but even then my vision was obscured by a murky liquid. There were things beyond the liquid that could move, though. I could feel them, sense them, but I couldn't touch them. In my mind a picture formed; dozens of upright creatures holding thin, rectangular objects, moving around in an enclosure outside of my own.
They had very flat faces, no tail, and—in my opinion—were far from attractive. Some of them seemed to have a second pair of eyes directly in front of their own, enlarging their original pair and supporting my thoughts on them being unattractive. As I studied these creatures, one of them made a loud noise of alarm, causing the others to move towards it. It pointed to a box like object that cast light on their faces from one side.
Whatever they saw agitated them, for they also started making loud exclamations and rapidly tapped at their rectangular devices. One thing was for sure, based off of their worried expressions and their new habit of repeatedly glancing at my place of containment, the commotion was centered around me.
I was struck with a sudden thought: Those voices, their outside. The creatures were so urgent, the noise was no longer inside my head, it was loud enough to were I could hear it from where I was. After a moment, I made a decision. That's where I must be. As if responding to my will, the glass around me shattered, and I stepped out into the world.
