Motor Cops
It was a quite unexpected encounter. Jake Ryan was on patrol, wearing his blue uniform, waiting for the change of the traffic signal, when they rode up: two other motorcycle cops dressed in their own police uniforms, except they were tan instead of blue.
"How's it going?" he asked them.
"Oh, great," said the cop with tanned skin. "In fact, couldn't be better."
"Certainly a great day for driving our bikes on the streets and looking at girls, isn't it?" said the other cop.
Jake was surprised by their flippant attitude. "Who are you guys?"
"I'm Ponch," said the tan one, "and this is Jon. We're just passing through Jackson Beach on our way to Malibu. We've been transferred."
"Malibu, huh?" said Jake, "That sounds great."
"We like being motorcycle cops," said Jon, "We can get all the fresh air the patrol car cops can't have, and the girls get to see how impressive we look on our bikes. Ponch here especially likes this."
"Yeah, that's right," said Ponch with a grin. "The ladies just can't resist me."
"That's fun to think about," said Jake, "I'm Jake. I work here at Jackson Beach."
"Really?" said Jon, "How do you like it? You find it fulfilling, or at least satisfying?"
"As a matter of fact, it is fulfilling," said Jake. "My father was a cop, too, and a killer murdered him and my mother. I swore to honor their memory by becoming a cop myself."
"Well, you look like a guy who can give the crooks in this town a run for their money," remarked Jon.
"Thanks," said Jake. "Who do you guys normally work for?"
"We're part of the California Highway Patrol," said Ponch, "or CHP. We drive on the highways in southern California near the Los Angeles area and take care of traffic offenders, and occasionally, some of the bigger troublemakers."
"Sounds like you guys have a more glamorous job than I do," said Jake.
"I wouldn't say that," said Jon, "Any policeman who gets to ride a police motorcycle is cool in my boat."
"Thanks, that's good to hear," said Jake.
"Do you get to pick up any hot women?" asked Ponch. "I hope you do, because then we'll have another thing in common."
"Kinda," said Jake, "On the first day of my job, I was attracted to two women at once. One was a very young Information clerk at the City Hall and Jail whom I flirted with a little. The other was an innocent victim held at gunpoint by her former boyfriend. I think the difference between the two of them is that my hormones attracted me to the Information clerk, while I had empathy for the battered woman, who is also a mother of an innocent little boy."
"Where is she now?" asked Jon, "The young mother?"
Jake smiled. "I married her. Laura Dixon is now Laura Ryan."
Jon and Ponch looked at each other in surprise. "Wow!" said Ponch, "I guess you're about ready to settle down!"
"You could say that," said Jake.
"Well, it looks like the traffic light is going to turn green pretty soon," observed Jon, "I guess we've got to get going."
"Yeah. So long, Jake! It's been nice meeting you!" said Ponch.
"Maybe we'll see each other again sometime," suggested Jake. "Maybe I'll even introduce you two to Hayley McCoy."
"Who's that?" asked Ponch.
"The young Information clerk I flirted with."
"Great!" both CHiPs said. "See you around, Jake!" And they drove away as the light turned green. Jake followed.
Talk about meeting two cool young CHiPs, Jake thought.
