From upstairs in her bedroom Lily could hear the doorbell echoing through her parents house. Butterflies erupted in her stomach, already knowing who was standing on her doorstep. She ran over to the mirror to do one last check. Her hair was done in a braid since she couldn't get it to look nice when it was down. Lily had never been much of a fan of make up but she had put on some red lip gloss. It was a special occasion. She took a few steps back from the mirror to make sure her outfit was still okay. After half an hour of debating her options she picked out just a black skirt and a baby pink blouse.
She heard the sound of the front door opening, followed by his voice greeting her mother. A wide smile spread on her face just at the sound of his voice. It took all her willpower not to run down the stairs and tackle him with a hug. But still, after the countless months that they had been together, she didn't want to come off as clingy. Her mum called for her from the bottom of the stairs, then continued to chat with their gust. She picked up the gift bag from her desk and started for the stairs.
Her cheeks turned bright red when she saw the look on his face when she got halfway down the stairs. His eyes went wide and his mouth hung open slightly, as if he'd never seen something so beautiful before. Every time he looked at her he acted as if it was the first time he'd seen her. James often told her that he would never get tired of her, and moments like those made her believe him.
He wrapped her up in a hug, squeezing her tightly but not too much. She was the perfect height to rest her head in his neck, which kept her from wearing heels as much as possible. The two fit together like puzzle pieces meant to be connected. She didn't want him to let go, but she was also anxious for the rest of the night. The two pulled away, and his hand took hers. Her mother told them to have fun before retreating into the kitchen, most likely to gossip with her dad about how adorable the two looked together.
James brought her to the door, holding it open for her and shutting it behind him. Once they were outside he put his hands on her waist and pulled her close. He was always hesitant to kiss her in front of her parents. She always reminded him that they were 18 years old, and that her parents knew that they kissed. But he always got too embarrassed to give her more than a peck in their presence.
"Happy anniversary Lil." He said, a wide smile on his face. She could tell he had tried to get his hair under control, but was unsuccessful. When she was younger his unruly locks used to aggravate her to no end. But she had come to love his crazy hair.
Lily reached up and pushed his hair back, giving her a better view of his face. "I love you." She said, wishing that there was a better way to describe just how she felt about him. But she'd yet to find a way to thoroughly express how much she loved him.
He linked his arm with hers and apparated them to the restaurant where they were to celebrate what they thought would be the first of countless years together.
