Alone
In some ways, it's better this way. Knowing she's gone, knowing for sure that the only thing left of her is that voicemail message, relieves him of the hope that she will one day reappear. But, at the same time, it's hard for him to let go. It's hard to admit that she is never coming back. It means he is alone, and that hurts as bad as the hope.
So, he brings her back. He dials her number and listens to her cheery voice telling him she's not available, and he lets his mind wander back to the memories of her. And, for a moment, they're together and happy again.
Then, the message ends, he closes the phone, and he is alone again.
