Disclaimer: I do not own any characters from Newsies, all other characters are my own creation.
Authors Note: I'm finally embarking on the story I've been trying to write for almost two years. This is just a little preface of sorts to get going and I'm almost done the first chapter. It's pretty short but I have much more to come!
"Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned."
- William Shakespeare
Prologue
Spot Conlon.
There are many words to describe this newsboy: suave, charming, tough, stubborn, leader, handsome… But, only one word in particular comes to mind: jackass.
He's a Brooklyn legend, mostly around the street rats and gutter dwellers. He's like some sort of a god to the newsies and he has more power than any other leader in any borough in New York. Everyone's always praising him, I can almost hear them now…
"Spot's a real leader, ain't dat right?"
"Yup! He's one helluva leader and one helluva guy. Ever see someone play poker like that?"
"No sir! He's got the best poker face in all a' New York! He's one of the most popular fellas in New York too."
"Especially with the ladies…"
I hear their "quiet" snickers around me… the constant whispers. They think I don't know. I'm not as dumb as people think I am. Spot himself knows this. Actually, I'm pretty sure he knows I know. Well, there is one thing I know that he doesn't… but, I'll get to that later. Spot's been "seeing" (and by seeing, I mean sleeping with) other girls behind my back. The Brooklyn newsgirls, who are oh so loyal to their king, tell me 'Spot would never cheat on his girl! He's a nice guy!'. Please, spare me. I've seen it with my own eyes, I've heard it with my own ears, and I'm not an idiot. I know of all the nameless girls he's taken to bed. And he makes up the most idiotic excuses… my favorite being: "I have a cold, so maybe you shouldn't stay tonight… Don't wanna get ya sick". It was so memorable because it was in the middle of summer.
Listen, I know Spot. Spot's smart, he's not an idiot either. And he knows I'm not one which begs the question: why does he do it? Why doesn't he just break up with me? These questions are easily answered:
Spot cheats because he can and he has to. I am in no way condoning cheating, but Spot is the leader of Brooklyn, which comes with a reputation. He must uphold his reputation to keep him where he's at. If he's acting like a sissy with his girl, to Brooklyn he's going to start acting like a sissy with his job. Plus, he likes to be a ladies man and create the illusion of a lady killer, so to speak. He's cheated on every other girl so why not me?
He won't break up with me because I was too much of a conquest. I'm sure he bet every newsie in his barracks that I, the most unattainable female newsie in New York City, would be his girl some day. I was unattainable simply because I would not date newsie scum. No respectable girl would. But, Spot was…different. I fell. I believed his words of love. Perhaps you should call me a fool.
And the even more important question: Why don't I break up with him?
This question has an even better answer. One I've been dreaming about in my sleep for weeks, fantasizing over it as I sell the morning addition…
Why am I not breaking up with him? Because I'm going to kill Spot Conlon.
This is just something I'm working on in between my Twilight story. If you like it PLEASE tell me because I'm so busy right now that if no one's reading this I probably won't continue it. I'm almost done chapter one so that should be up fairly soon. Review, review, review!
