A/N: Really short one-off - 'what happens next' scene for the end of episode 16.
I'm starting to look forward to the end of the season when I'll be able to develop something longer before the next episode is released!
"What the hell?" Jake scowled at the dozens of dead crows encircling Cassie's house. He picked a careful path through them and banged on the front door.
Cassie pulled the door open as she tied a knot in the sash of her fuzzy pink robe. "What?" She ran a hand through her tangled hair, trying to smooth it down.
"What did you do last night?" Jake demanded.
Cassie stiffened and refused to meet his eyes, "Excuse me? I don't think that's any of your business."
"Yeah?" Jake grabbed her arm and dragged her out on the porch, sweeping an arm out to the circle of bird corpses. "Again, what did you do last night? Did you work a spell?"
Cassie's eyes had gone wide at the sight of the birds. "Holy crap! I didn't, no, I didn't do anything like that." She backed up into the house. "Jesus Jake, I didn't do that."
Jake frowned, "Well, something *made* this happen. What did you-" He clenched his jaw as Adam came down the stairs, rocking a serious case of bedhead, to join Cassie at the door. Jake took a step away from Cassie as Adam put an arm around her waist. Cassie blushed. "Adam."
"Jake. What are you doing here so early?" Adam sounded suspicious and Jake was struck with the urge to punch him.
"I could ask you the same thing," Jake said. Of course, it was pretty damn obvious, he thought, what Adam was doing there. He should kick the guy's ass for even thinking about touching Cassie, let alone what he'd...
"Adam, something's seriously wrong," Cassie said, trying to derail them before they really got started. "Look!"
"Christ, Jake. I knew you had a thing for Cassie, but this is nuts," Adam said, standing nearly toe to toe with the guy.
"I didn't do this," Jake said through clenched teeth. His hands fisted at his sides, but he made the effort not to punch Adam. "You're sure you didn't work any magic last night?"
Cassie nodded, wide-eyed. "We didn't do anything like that."
"Well, whatever you did do, you can't do again," Jake said, smirking a little.
Adam frowned, and Jake suspected he was going to come up excuses as to why they should, but Cassie interrupted, "We won't. Of course. What could cause something like this?"
"I don't know," Jake admitted. "Maybe you should talk to your father though?"
Adam scowled, "No. We can leave him out of this."
Cassie touched his arm briefly, "Jake's right. I know we agreed to leave our parents out of this, but if he knows something that might help..."
"Is that the way it's going to be?" Adam asked, his voice getting louder with every word. "Every time something goes wrong, something bad happens, you're going to go to your father first for information?"
"Adam! No. But-"
"But we agreed, Cassie. We need to figure this out on our own," Adam insisted.
"Don't be stupid, Adam," Jake said, trying not to smirk. "Blackwell might know something. You'd be an idiot not to ask him about this."
Cassie nodded, "He's right, we have to talk to my dad."
"Cassie, no. You can't..." Adam trailed off, perhaps realizing that Cassie was serious. "You're on your own then. I don't want anything to do with him."
"Adam, please, wait!" Cassie called after him as he stormed off to his truck.
Jake shoved his hands in his pockets, biting the inside of his mouth to keep from grinning. What woman would put up with a guy who would so easily abandon her the 'day after'? He just had to be patient...
Looking forward to seeing what the show actually gives us next!
