This is a one-shot I decided to write for the #TellSomeoneYouLoveThem thing going on. You can look at it as an AU or not. That's completely up to you. It was written quite quickly, but I still hope you enjoy it!
I do not own OUAT or any of the characters!
Tell Someone You Love Them
During these dark times, Emma had grown to be Regina's only source of hope that maybe things would get better someday. They had lost many comrades to this ongoing apocalypse and made countless new friends, family, and allies along the way. Death surrounded them and was always lurking right around the corner, literally. It always boiled down to how many rounds you had, how many you could take down with a knife, and luck.
Lately, however, it appeared as though their luck was running out. The dead had already claimed the lives of Killian, Robin, and a few others. It wasn't getting any better either. They were running out of food, water, supplies, and most of all, hope.
"I don't know if we could take on another swarm like that again so soon, Sheriff Swan," the brunette pointed out with an exasperated sigh. Regina wiped a build up of sweat, dirt, and undead blood from her cheek.
Someone had apparently spooked a horde of biters out of the woods and before the group knew it, they were surrounded. Thankfully, they had managed to pull together their strength and fight the monsters off.
Emma came stumbling towards Regina with a hand over her shoulder. "Yeah, I know...we gotta find some supplies and fast..."
Regina noticed the blonde trying to hold back a pained expression as a feeling of dread pooled in her stomach. She reached forward and grabbed Emma's hand, removing it from her shoulder gently. What was revealed made Regina throw her hands up to her mouth. Chocolate eyes began to glaze over with tears as she shool her head. To be bitten by one of those things...it was a death sentence, and then you turned.
The blonde rested her non-bloodied hand on one of Regina's shoulders. "Hey...it's okay. You know it was bound to happen with how clumsy I am."
"No! It's not okay! None of this is okay!" Regret started flooding Regina's senses. All of those times she could have told the blonde how she really felt. All the time she had wasted, even in the face of armegeddon. With tears rushing down her face, the brunette croaked, "It's not fair..."
"It's the end of the world, Regina...it's not meant to be fair..." Emma pushed past Regina, continuing down the rural abandoned road.
"No, you don't understand," Regina responded in a strained voice.
Emma stopped in her tracks, head down, and back turned to Regina. "What don't I get? I'm going to die. It's as simple as that."
"I love you..."
"I know...I love you, too..."
