"Are you insane like me? Been in pain like me?"

A/N - First fic, sorry if the start seems strange but it gets better :) I hope that you all enjoy and if you don't feel free to tell me why just no flames, there's no need to be rude and act like an idiot. I know the first chapter's short but it was best to end it there, the next one's are actually longer though.

Maya Hart was the cool girl of the school, she was the one who rebelled against the teachers and radiated an aura of confidence and danger that no one else seemed to. But Maya like everyone else had secrets;

In second grade she left a secret admirers note in Riley's bag to make up for the fact that she had been upset that day.

In third grade she was the one who let the gerbils out of their cage.

When she was in Fourth grade her mother's boyfriend hit her for the first time.

When she was in Fifth grade she realized he would never stop.

It was later that year she learned to hide her bruises behind makeup, and her sadness behind a smile.

The sound of an alarm clock echoed through the cold, rat infested, dark and damp apartment that Maya Hart called home. It was a Monday, Maya's least favourite day, although she didn't really like any other days of the week either. And it didn't help that she woke up at 6am every morning, even if she had only fallen asleep one or two hours before that.

After a couple of seconds Maya groaned and smacked the alarm clock hoping that would shut it up. She hadn't gotten much sleep last night, she had laid awake until 2am as her Mom had taken a triple shift and Maya couldn't sleep until she knew her mother had gotten home safely.

Although Maya knew that being 'Home' didn't mean that her Mom was suddenly safe. It wasn't so bad last time, her mom's boyfriend had been so drunk he had passed out hours before Katy returned from the diner. Then it had just been a case of Maya couldn't sleep; she had tried but she couldn't, she tossed and turned occasionally getting out of bed and walking around her room to try and tire herself out.

But it didn't work.

She hurried to the bathroom, making sure she wouldn't wake up the monster sleeping on the couch. Her eyes had black rings under them and there was still a harsh red mark across her right cheek from when he had slapped her. Carefully she applied her makeup, wincing slightly as she covered up the red mark but she was just grateful it hadn't bruised.

She tensed at the familiar stench of beer, cigarettes and leather, a drawling voice called out from behind her "Shouldn't you be in school by now?" Maya turned around nervously, trying not to stutter too much "I-I uh..I'm just going now..going now..to school..yeah..uh...I was about-t to leave." she tried to push past him but he grabbed her wrist and pushed her roughly against the wall.

The tiles felt cold against Maya's skin and the broken edges poked and prodded her back. He lent in close until it took all of Maya's self-control not to gag at his breath, she closed her eyes and stiffened bracing herself for what was about to happen. His grip tightened on her wrist, his right hand pressing it against the wall, his grip got tighter and tighter until Maya cried out in pain. He smirked at her and let go, spitting at her as she hurried away.

Maya blinked the tears away furiously, she put on her usual mask and hurried out of the door. Ready to face the world.
