The Pain of a Cat
Tohru, Shigure and Kyo were eating breakfast.
Tohru had tried to warn Kyo that the little side dish was leek soup but he didn't seem to care. She couldn't complain though. Most of the time he didn't bother to eat.
He had been like a zombie ever since...well they didn't talk about that. It was too painful. Maybe later on. Years from now when it didn't seem as if they had to fight to keep Kyo alive.
"Kyo, when does the term end?" Shigure asked.
"Yes," Kyo answered absently.
This answer did not surprise Shigure or Tohru. Kyo tended to shut them out and answer questions with yes no matter the question.
Suddenly Shigure snapped.
"Dear God Kyo! Why are you doing this? Stop blaming yourself and stop shutting us out! It wasn't your fault!" he said vehemently.
"Yes it was. I should have ..."
"Do you think anyone saw this coming? Do you think anyone had a clue this would happen? We didn't know!" Shigure was crying now.
He continued.
"No one knew that you and Yuki would fall in love! No one knew that Yuki would get pregnant. No one, no one knew that he'd die in childbirth and that the baby would die too! No one knew!" he screamed sobbing.
"Don't you think I miss him? Don't you think I wanted a little cousin to spoil? I love all of you damnit and I loved him too. So Kyo please, please don't shut us out," he pleaded.
Tohru stared at him in shock and her heart broke but what she saw next surprised her even more.
"I'm sorry, Shigure. I'm so sorry. Please don't cry. We'll be okay. We'll all be okay," Kyo said brokenly. He hugged Shigure and they cried together.
And they were okay. Eventually Shigure fell in love with Ayame and Kyo fell in love with Haru. The pain they all felt dulled.
Sometimes Kyo cried at night. They all did. But at least they were trying. Yuki...Yuki would have wanted them to be happy. So they tried. For themselves. And for him.
