Summary: In which Jaune ponders a name and it's past.
Remnant.
Remnant. The definition of which is: remains, a smaller piece of something left behind.
Why is the world in which we live in called Remnant? What are we a remnant of? The world we live in, that we walk, that we see, that we know of since the beginning of time - it certainly feels whole. Tangible, corporeal, real. If anything, I believe that the we, the occupants of this world are Remnants. Whether Human or Faunus or even Grimm - I believe we are not whole. We are abstract, illusionary, false, fictitious. We know words that hold little to no meaning: Oum, Monty, God, Spartan, Goldilocks and so much more. But what do they mean? Most seem to be names but to whom? Or to what?
History of ours are bloody, wars between Grimm and Humans. Or Grimms and Faunus, or between Humans and Faunus. In some uncommon but not rare times, all three continuously at each other - calling for blood and slaughter. But why do we fight? We very may never know the perspective of the Grimm, mindless as they are. But what of Humans and Faunus? Where does this bad blood come from? The history book have told that Humans of that time believed Faunus to be demons (Again, a word that has appeared with no origin and no meaning), or the offspring of them. But those same books have been wrong before. They told of ultimate slaughter of villages in the places of Vale and Mistral. They told of those Who-Glowed-Brightly are Angels (Once again, an empty, mysterious word) and Ancient Warriors, chosen to save humanity. So, again, why do we slaughter one another?
We are close in genetics and DNA, with barely any difference to be seen. We need to be united, a fact that many have agreed on but none listen to. Faunus cry of unfairness and mistreated-ness and while very true, would there be a difference if the roles were switched? If the Faunus were the 'dominant' species, would Humans be groveling at their feet, calling for help but at the same time blood? Or would Faunus treat Human the same, as an equal individual? We will never know as history has already happened with no way of going back.
But this conundrum of our name, will it ever be solved?
Are we perhaps a Remnant of a war-hungry world, driven into fragments of it's former self? Did we once belong to another world, ripped apart by bloody revolutions, which may have been the origin of the long feud between Faunus and Humans? Or is it a corrupted safe haven, once meant to house those deserving to have a second chance. We may never know. Life as we may know it may end before an answer is found. Are we content with this? Are we perfectly fine with this mystery, this unsolved case? Does this name, Remnant mean nothing to others?
