What the other teachers were thinking when Gildroy Lockhart was at Hogwarts.
Minerva McGonagall was looking out the window of the Hogwarts staff room, watching some 4th year Hufflepuffs fly around on the Quidditch pitch, Panoma Sprout and Filius Flitwick were discussing something in plush arm chairs by the fire, Severus Snape was sitting stiff as a board in his black cloak by the back of the room, and Albus Dumbledore was immersed in a rather tall stack of paper work. Everything was peaceful; until suddenly the door swung open, to reveal a gleaming Lockhart.
Minerva, Albus, Filius, and Panoma remembered Lockhart from when he was in school. He had been a true idiot, though all the girls liked him anyway because of his good looks.
When he left school, everyone assumed he would never make his way in the real world, and when Lockhart's face began to pop up across the country on the front of books, all the teachers were shocked.
When Albus interviewed him for the job of the DADA teacher, it was immediately clear to him that he was dealing with a foolish fraud. However, there was no one else willing to take his place, seeing as the post seemed to bring bad luck, so Lockhart got the job.
"Hello Gildroy." Minerva said warily, displeased at the disturbance of the peace in the staff room.
"Hello all, you seem so very happy to be in the presents of someone so magnificent."
No one was smiling.
"Why hello Albus!" Gildroy continued, "Here, let me help you with that paper work, I learned a marvelous little spell from a zombie I made friends with." He flourished his wand, and with an enormous wink, did a sort of zigzag motion with it, when the other teachers looked up, the papers were burned down to ashes.
"Reparo" Snape snarled "Lockhart, we were just fine before you came in, so if you would be ever so kind, would you leave."
"Yes," Flitwick piped up, "Go curl your hair."
Gildroy left to do just that, half skipping on his way out the door.
"He actually listened to that." Panoma said in amusement. "I remember when he was at school, handsome but dumb as a troll, never thought he would go anywhere, bets on him being a fraud?"
There was no reply, they all knew he was.
