Disclaimer: I don't own Merlin
He saw the long white hair from across the battlefield. He knew the old man who wandered through the broken bodies of fallen warriors. That was the man who had killed his father. Arthur unsheathed his sword, walking calmly towards the sorcerer.
Emrys closed his eyes. All he had worked for, all he had sacrificed... for nothing, "One more chance, please," he whispered. His hand tightened on the twisted wooden staff, "This can't be the end. What about Albion? What of The Once and Future King?" He could feel tears rolling down his cheeks. That was when the blade drove itself through his chest.
"That's for killing my father," Arthur growled. The sorcerer fell to the ground. Arthur dislodged Excalibur from the elders back, the blade stained with crimson.
He could feel the spell wearing off as his power drained with his blood. Merlin took a shaky breath. He turned to see who had who finally defeated him. The blond hair, blue eyes, shimmering armor, "Arthur."
"Merlin," Arthur gasped, barely able to believe his eyes.
Merlin coughed, "Brother will slaughter brother. I guess it makes sense."
Arthur fell to his knees, "I'm sorry, I- I didn't know. How? You- the sorcerer, he-" It finally clicked. Arthur stared in shock at his dying friend.
Merlin gave a weak nod.
"You have magic?"
"Yes."
Arthur stood up, "No."
"Arthur, please-"
"No! You lied to me! Betrayed me! I thought I could trust you."
"You can trust me. Arthur, I'm you're my friend, I'd never betray you," Merlin tried to smile.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"If I was found out I would have been killed," Merlin felt the his own blood on his hands, "I guess I was destined to die either way," he laughed.
"I'm sorry," Arthur slowly kneeled back down, "I didn't mean it."
"I know," Merlin's eyes closed, "I forgive you. I only wish I had more time to explain."
"You're not going to die Merlin," Arthur grasped his friends hand, the chill of his pale skin scared Arthur. A tear rolled down Arthur's cheek.
"Arthur, you can't waste your time crying over a dying servant," Merlin could feel himself losing consciousness, "You have to fight... For Camelot, for the world you were meant to build. Go."
"I'm not leaving you here."
"I'm not long for this world, Arthur. If you won't fight for Camelot then fight for me. Have a good life, do all the things you were destined to do, and remember, I'll always be there for you."
"You can't die," Arthur sobbed.
"This isn't the end, you're The Once and Future King," Merlin smiled, "Until we meet again, Arthur Pendragon," Merlin exhaled, his hand falling from Arthur's.
"Until we meet again."
