Description: An alternate version of "Fallen." What if Sam had given Daniel a different answer when he asked if there was ever anything between them?
I wish
"Was there ever anything...between us?"
That sentence scared Sam. She didn't know why, it was a perfectly innocent question. After all, Daniel's memories were gone. How was he to know? She gulped past a lump in her throat and said "Why? Do you think there was?"
"I don't know." Daniel shrugged. "Maybe. I feel more comfortable around you then I did around Jim so I just thought..."
Inwardly, Sam smiled at Daniel calling O'Neill 'Jim.'
"Was there?" He looked at Sam, now at the exit of the tent. His eyes were still brilliantly blue, full of curiosity. But it was a different curiosity now. He didn't want to hear about Sam's culture or language or way of life. In a way, he wanted to know who he was through her.
Sam sighed. Hell she thought what harm could it do to tell him? It probably wouldn't change his mind about coming back anyway. Sam mustered up her courage as she looked Daniel in the eye. "I wish, Daniel. I wish."
"W-well why didn't we?" His brow furrowed at her.
"I don't know." Sam held back a couple tears that threatened to go. "That's just how it was. I'm sorry." She left the tent before he could see if she was crying, wiped her eyes, and headed toward the village square, where O'Neill and Shamda stood.
"Carter!" O'Neill said, once he saw her approach. "Shamda here was just telling me a story about..." He paused briefly, as if trying to remember.
He probably wasn't even listening. Sam thought He normally doesn't.
However, her C.O. surprised her when he finally remembered and said "A dog and some dancing monkeys."
Is he on drugs? She thought briefly, before it was explained.
"The moral of which is appearances can be deceptive." Shamda told her.
"I got that." O'Neill put a hand on Shamda's shoulder. "Very good story, wonderful. Full of nuances, I like that."
Sam smiled half-heartedly. She knew he hadn't really payed attention, but she didn't have time to say anything before Teal'c and Jonas walked up to them.
"We, uh, we sent up a UAV." Jonas said.
"The ruins are quite extensive." Teal'c added.
"Yeah, it's gonna take us weeks to scour this place properly."
"What of Daniel Jackson?"
Sam was about to answer when she heard an achingly familiar voice from behind say "He's going home."
Turning around, she saw Daniel come out of the tent. Sam's heart leapt and plummeted at the same time, and she didn't quite know why.
Okay, that's it people. That's all you ever get... okay I'm kidding. Please R&R. I like criticism as much as I like you telling me you want me to write more, so please criticize me as well. I'm not joking, I really want to hear you opinions. The next chapter will be written soon.
