Journals of an Onlooker
Prologue
The young boy stood in line, breathing heavily as he waited his turn. He could see the fear on the
other children's faces as they too waited obediently for their chance to approach the wooden stool
at the front of the large room.
Upon the stool lay a battered old pointed hat. Beside the stool stood a tall aging woman with a
pointed nose and wearing thin-rimmed spectacles and a flowing, deep green dress robe. One by
one, the aging woman reeled off the names of the petrified children and one by one they steeped
forward. Each time she would invite the child to sit and would proceed to place the hat upon the
quivering head. All this ceremonial activity would seem quite out of the ordinary to a confused
onlooker.
The woman, nearing the end of the parchment upon which the list lay, called one of the final few
names.
"Finch-Fletchley, Justin"
The onlooker made his way up to the stool, head held high. On the day he had been expecting to
start at Eton, he was standing in the great hall of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He
was standing under the compassionate stare of head master Albus Dumbledore. He was being
given a stern stare from head of Gryffindor house Minerva McGonagall, a stare that indicated that
he should proceed.
The hat was placed on the head of the onlooker, who was now known to go by the name of Justin
Finch-Fletchley. The raggedy piece of head wear drooped over the boys small head, so much so
that you would never have noticed his deep brown hair underneath it. The boy was given quite a
start as a voice above him shouted
"Hufflepuff!"
The boy, who from now on we will call Justin, slowly rose to his feet and made his way shakily
towards the Hufflepuff table. That was the one with the green-attired students right? Judging by
the laughter he decided that it was indeed not the correct table. Distracted by the laughter, he
was oblivious to the necessity to look where he was going, bashing his shins against the
Hufflepuff bench. "Ouch!" he thought, "I would have thought that the laughing table over there
would have been the painful one!"
And so it began. Sat at the painful and most definitely not shin-friendly, Hufflepuff table, Justin
Finch-Fletchley started his career as a Hufflepuff at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
A\N:I appreciate that there are numerous spellings/misspellings of Justin's name but I'm going to
stick to this one for consistency. Please r&r.
