He'd always thought their last stand would be more dramatic than this. He'd been raised on stories of the Cylon Wars, where brave soldiers would go out in blazes of glory, taking whole Cylon ships down with them. He'd figured that they'd at least manage to take out a few of those farms before the Cylons found and destroyed them. That way they'd be able to go to their graves knowing they'd accomplished something, however small and ultimately pointless. He'd been sure they'd have some small chance to be heroes, even if no one would ever hear about it.
But the Cylons, as always, had other plans. It seemed that Kara's destruction of the farm and their subsequent rescue of her had pissed the toasters off enough to go looking for this band of humans who hadn't been worth the effort before. They'd descended on them in the middle of the night, dropping bombs and sending in centurions and generally using much more force than they needed. They were making a point: we're stronger than you, and this time you won't escape.
And so it was that he found himself making his last stand in his boxers at the edge of the pyramid court of all places, with one leg blown completely off and blood dripping in his eyes, a gun in either hand. I'll never be able to play with this injury, he thought, then almost laughed aloud at the sheer ridiculousness of it. Unless they have pyramid in the afterlife, you're never going to play again. He shot at a centurion, who went down after several hits. But what kind of afterlife would it be without pyramid?
Then he did laugh, and a pair of centurions stopped in front of him, looking as perplexed as walking toasters could. This is why you'll never understand humans, he thought. You could never be crazy enough to laugh a minute before you die. It was an oddly comforting thought, something to hold on to as the strength drained from his hands and he dropped one of his guns. He smiled at the Cylons as he aimed one last ineffectual shot at them. Then they lifted their guns in the kind of unison only machines could achieve, and fired.
