"Of course I love you
And of course it's what's inside you
That matter's most
But now I think the whole charade is ending…"
-Sex Changes by The Dresden Dolls

For years, she'd tried to put up the façade that they were a happy normal family; she'd done her best, really she had.

But, how normal can your family be when your son is cursed, and could take the form of a monster at any moment?

This curse- her husband's family's curse- had come out of nowhere. She hadn't been told about it until after she'd given birth and her baby had almost instantaneously transformed into a monster. Only then had her husband decided to clue her in.

He'd wanted to kill the baby, and the thought had horrified her, despite the grotesque form her child was in. She was deadest against killing it; it was her baby, and no infant deserved to be killed. Though, she had to be honest in saying that she didn't know exactly what to do with it. Then, the doctor (who was a member of the Sohma family) had produced a bracelet of blue and white beads, and slipped it onto the creature's wrist- and it transformed into a normal looking baby.

Upon seeing this, that her child could look normal, she couldn't contain herself and had embraced her baby. There were protests against her holding him, but she didn't listen; this was her baby and no one was ever going to tell her that she couldn't hold her son. But, the moment she held him against her, there was a pop and a puff of smoke and her baby had turned into a tiny, newborn kitten.

Then, it was all explained to her, the entirety of the curse (not just leaving it at what her husband had said); that a select thirteen of the Sohma's would transform, when hugged, into animals of the Chinese Zodiac; her son was the outcast of the thirteen, the cat, who bore an extra curse as well.

She had cried a lot that night, mostly for her son.

A nanny was hired- a male one – to take care of Kyo, her son. As she couldn't hold him and her husband refused to, a nanny had been necessary. It was such torture for her to be unable to hold her baby, but she did the best she could to take care of him in any way that didn't require her holding him.

Her husband hated Kyo, hated that she'd given birth to the Cat. He said that their family was stained with Kyo living with them. They fought so often, because of Kyo. She argued out of her frustration that he'd never even look at his son, and he'd yell at her for giving birth to a monster.

She loved her husband, and it hurt so much to have him continually angry with her.

She raised Kyo as best she could. To even out the scorn he received daily from his father, she told him she loved him often, as often as she could.

Kyo was rarely let outside of their property. She was too afraid of him getting too close to others and transforming, and if he were to lose his beads, it would be terrible. He was much safer in the house, or in their garden. She never let him watch tv, as she was afraid he'd become curious of the images of the outside world, and try to leave the house.

Many times a day, almost as often as she told him she loved him, she'd check to see if his beads were still on his wrist. She did this because there was always that one small hope that, maybe, his beads wouldn't be on him, and that he was truly a normal boy whom her husband could love.

But, the beads were always there, and her husband always hated Kyo and blamed her for his abnormality. She kept trying so hard to keep them together, to keep everything normal and it tore her apart.

She couldn't handle it all, and she needed a way out.

Just a different perspective on Kyo's mom. We're only getting one side of the story in the manga- Kyo's point of view. Why not try her point of view, hm?
