A/N: Another request by the one and only jatd4ever. This time a Lavinia and Gunther story with the prompt "I don't have time for games."
This is cute. I don't own jatd.
It was a pinky promise
Gunther was many things. He was good at even more things.
He was a knight's apprentice and set to be knighted within the next two years if everything went well. He was also a kinder man than he was when he was younger.
He was the stealer of hearts. The black haired man was also very good at dancing around his rivals and working with a sword. He was good at etiquette, being a gentleman (even Jane saw it), he was a good negotiator and mediator, subtle at hints and had a developed sense of humility.
But he was not good with children. That was the one thing he openly admitted to being a lesser knight than his red-haired partner. Jane was merely two years his junior, so he could hardly consider her a child, but the princess and prince... Heavens.
How in the name of everything good did she put that little brat of a prince in his place so often? Goodness knew the little boy needed it; his father was too soft on him. Of course Gunther would never reveal said thoughts. Jane, however, wasn't going to be walked over, even if it cost it her knighthood.
Princess Lavinia was always so busy, she talked quickly and always in the mood to play. She was also always in the mood to play with Gunther, but he didn't have time for games. Or rather, he didn't want to play games, but saying that to a member of the royal family could cost him his knighthood.
"Gunther!" How the hell did she find him? He was hiding in the one place no one would ever think to look for him: Jane's bedroom. It was actually similar to his own room, he noted.
"Yes, Princess?" He stood to meet the child. She tilted her head curiously, the dragon wings flopping happily at her back.
"You don't like playing with me, do you?" She asked, "You always have something else to do."
The squire hesitated, but decided to be honest. "Yes, your majesty, I don't like playing, but it isn't simply you. I just prefer not to play."
"That's okay," Her little majesty smiled a gap-toothed smile at him, "How about we just go for a walk?"
Gunther couldn't see why this would be an issue, he didn't mind walking, it gave his legs a chance to exercise.
"Very well," He stood, and the small girl slipped a hand into his, much to his surprise.
"You need to play more, Gunther, then you won't be such a mean boy." She said with what she possibly considered to be a wise nod.
"I'm a knight, Princess," He said gently, "It's my duty to protect you."
"Knights can play for a few moments, can they not?" She asked, her eyes impossibly wide.
"I apologise, your majesty, but I don't like playing. Walking is what I like." He said firmly. He wasn't going to let her talk him out of his mindset.
Lavinia's shoulders fell before they perked up again.
"Well, that is something. Can I walk with you? Will you come and get me if you go for a walk again?" She was making her eyes wide again and he had to laugh.
"Yes, Princess, I will find you and ask you to join me." He promised, offering her his pinkie. She grinned again and hooked her pinky around his.
She was rather sweet, how could he refuse?
