Sadly, I don't even own this disclaimer considering I copied and pasted it out of dreamsweetmydear's Sweet Little Boy (which by the way is great. Great perspective on McGee.)
"They're not her family," Tony said, randomly, much to the surprise of several people in the squad room. Gibbs' Major Case Response Team was pretty much use to Tony, obviously they have to deal with him every day, but they thought he was going to be quiet for at least another ten minutes as he tried to get his paperwork done in time for the deadline.
"Who, Tony?" Ziva asked.
"Lauren Loredo. She went with her grandparents. They're not her family."
Lauren Loredo's parents had been killed in a double homicide. Her father was a Marine and the case had fallen under NCIS jurisdiction. After the case had been solved, thirteen year old Lauren had been released from NCIS's temporary custody and was living with her grandparents, three states away.
"Tony, they're her grandparents. Of course they're her family."
Tony slammed down his pen. "Dammit. They're not. They're relatives. Barely ever saw her. Gave her money for birthdays and holidays. Not her family."
Ziva and McGee stared at him. Gibbs continued with his paperwork.
"Alright. Example time. In Harkin's Point, Alana Cobalt's character, Anna, is a girl adopted when she was three. Her real aunt discovers her twelve years later, by which time, Anna considers her adoptive parents her real parents. Her aunt, Kelly, is a relative. Her adoptive parents are her family."
McGee looked at Tony. "Harkin's Point?"
"Good story, okay production, great acting," Tony said. "Not the point though. You're not getting it." Tony pulled at his hair. "Alright. New example. My father. Blood. He's a relative. You three, Abby, Ducky, Palmer. Not blood. You're family."
Tony stopped, froze completely. He stared at Gibbs for half a second and dashed to the elevator. Gibbs stood and jogged after him.
Once in the elevator with Tony, Gibbs hit the button as if going to Abby's lab. Halfway there, he hit the emergency switch. The elevator stopped.
"I get it, Tony. You didn't have to run. We feel the same."
"Huh?"
"You didn't have to run. We feel the same."
"Thanks."
Gibbs hit the switch again and the elevator began to rise.
"Yup. And Harkin's Point. Ain't a movie. At least not one Alana Cobalt starred in."
The elevator arrived and Gibbs stepped out. Tony froze for a second, shocked, before following after him.
"You follow Alana Cobalt, Boss?"
