A/N: A second goodbye-to-RENT oneshot. This one more...spiritual, for lack of a better word.
Disclaimer: Jonathan Larson totally rocks. I give him full credit.
Shooting Star
Colors swell and recede beyond the realm of comprehension. Haunting voices lift in harmony, echoing and reverberating across the wide space that is Life. The stars twinkle overhead, casting a dim light on the faces below.
Faces upturned for some sign, some signal that everything will be okay. Waiting for someone to break the silence. But there is no one. The voices grow louder, the words inaudible. No one is breathing. Waiting…just waiting.
Then a shooting star leaps across the Milky Way, disappearing across the horizon. As one, the people take a breath. The voices stop.
An explosion of sweet, sweet music. The first notes. They recognize this.
Turning their faces away from the sky above, they face forward, faces shining in exultation at their final chance to stand united as one. Their bodies sway lightly to the music, fingertips touching. The audience forms in front of them. A swarm of adoring fans, here to see the last tribute to their hero, Jonathan Larson.
The singing begins, and as always, they are in perfect synchronization. They haven't forgotten how. They will never forget how. This is part of them.
The music swells, warming the souls of all. The colors become almost tangible, and the air is sweet with passion. The sky overhead is suddenly nothing but shooting stars.
They came to witness the end of an era. They stay to share their love with those around them. One community. One family.
The awe of the moment is too inspiring for words. The writers among the audience will later attempt pen to paper, and find they have forgotten how to express glory. But they will never forget the sensations and the love they left with.
And someday there will be a new chance. A chance for the lights to rise on the story once again. And all will commune once more – to celebrate Bohemia. And all that RENT inspires.
It's time now, to sing out - though the story never ends, let's celebrate, remember 12 years in the life of friends...
