Please note that is my very first fanfic and I want to improve. So please review and give me tips. I can take criticism.

"Next!" called a harsh and demanding voice. The guy in front of me flinched and started stumbling towards the door. How in the world did I end up here? I had promised myself that I would never ever get involved with these kinds of people again. And yet here I, Veronica Able, stand in line for a job where I will have to deal with them. Although not all of them are bad. But I mean come on! One in a Million is bound to be good. And anyway Mary always thought that she was a Muggle. Until about a month ago that is.

"Veronica, Veronica get up! Quick get up!"

"Nooooo!" came my muffled and sleepy voice from somewhere under the covers.

"Come on!"

"Umpf! Mary go away." I whined as she started poking me everywhere.

"Get UP!" She pulled the blanket away on the last word.

"Graaah! Its freezing and….. THREE IN THE MORNING? ARE YOU CRAZY? WHY WOU-…"

From the bed next to mine a low grumble could be heard and I immediately shut my mouth. The last thing I wanted was to wake up all the other girls. Because then they would start yelling at me for waking them up and that would probably wake up the entire Orphanage. 14 kids and a middle-aged woman, with an incredible resemblance to a toad, all screaming at once? I think my head would explode.

"Ronnie you need to come quick! There`s an Owl outside the window!"

"Whaa?" I rubbed my eyes "It was probably just a dream."

"No it wasn´t. It`s still there. Look!"

I looked over to the window and gasped. There was an owl perched on the windowsill tapping its beak against the window impatiently. "No no no. it can`t be." I thought. But then I noticed the letter attached to its leg. I dashed to the window and fumbled with the latch. But Mary held my arm.

"What are you going to do with it?" she whispered.

"I don´t know yet."

"Just please don`t hurt it."

I sighed. Sometimes Mary really was too sweet for her own good. Even if that owl would start attacking her she wouldn`t even give it a scratch.

"Of course not. You know I wouldn`t do that. Unless it hurts us of course. "

She let go and I finally managed to open the window and the owl swooped in. Mary gave a surprised shriek when it landed on her arm and stared at the creature with wide eyes.

"Don`t worry. Just hold still and hold your arm out to me."

She did as I told and I started removing the letter from its leg and noticed it was addressed with green ink. I gulped and turned to Mary.

"Wow! Who attaches a letter to an owl?"

"Mary what day is it today?"

"The 14th of May." She said a little surprised as to why I would ask such a seemingly random question when an owl had just delivered a letter.

"So it's your Birthday." I breathed.

"Oh right! I forgot in all the excitement. But why does it matter?"

Instead of answering I just silently held out the letter. It said in green curvy letters:

"To Mary Swibble

Number 74 patchwoodstreet

Girls room on the second floor

London"

"Wow! Do you think it's a birthday card? I`ve never gotten a card from anyone outside of the orphanage before! Who do you think it`s from?"

She said all of this very quickly so it sounded more like one really long word.

"I don`t know", I lied. "Why don`t you open it?"

Mary tore open the envelope very quickly and started reading the letter. Her eyes grew impossibly wide as her eyes travelled farther down the page.

"Mary what is it?"

"I`m a wizard." She said in a hoarse whisper.

And that was when my world came tumbling down.
