It was a warm, pleasant day, perfect for going out. So Kaneki decided that he would go to the park, and dragged his boyfriend Hide along. "Do you think we brought enough bread?" Hide asked, holding up a loaf of bread as he walked. Kaneki smiled, and shook his head. "You know bread isn't even healthy for ducks, right?" he asked. "Aw, but they like it so much! You're no fun." Hide pouted. The two kept walking through the park until they reached a large lake. Hide began tossing small chunks of bread at some ducks by the edge of the pond, who swam around eating the bread as fast as it was thrown. Kaneki sat next to hide, quietly watching the ducks eat. He hadn't had a moment's peace in years, and being able to quietly spend some time with Hide meant the world to him. Some time later, Kaneki noticed that Hide had thrown about half of the loaf of bread and took it out of his hands.

"I think that's enough, you're going to kill the poor birds at this rate!" Kaneki laughed, holding the bread in the air so Hide couldn't reach it. Hide tried to jump high enough to reach the bread, but Kaneki dodged him every time. "Why are you so worked up over some bread Kaneki? Did you want some too?" Hide joked, quacking and flapping his arms. Kaneki paused, and lowered his arms. "You know I can't eat this, right?" he said, raising an eyebrow and playfully smacking Hide on the head. "Oh, right." Hide said, falling silent as he took the bread from Kaneki. He silently scolded himself for bringing up such a sensitive topic, especially now that they actually had a moment to escape from their problems for once. "Um... Hide, are you ok?" Kaneki asked, noticing how quiet his boyfriend had gotten. Hide ignored him, walking to the very edge of the water. He threw the bread as hard as he could, and it sailed a few feet before hitting a duck and knocking it into the water.

"Hide!" Kaneki yelled, running up to Hide and grabbing his arms. "Sorry, I didn't mean to hit the duck!" Hide said, laughing nervously and raising his hands in surrender. Kaneki smiled, glad Hide was acting normal again. "Alright, whatever you say. Let's just forget this happened and enjoy our day out, ok?" he suggested. "Okay" Hide said. He stepped forward so he could hug Kaneki, but slipped on some mud and fell backwards into the water, Kaneki landing on top of him. They lay still in the water for a moment, trying to process what had just happened. Then the two burst into laughter, and laughed until they cried.

Kaneki was the first to get up, still laughing as he wiped away his tears and tried to wring the water out of his clothes. Hide sat up after a moment, clutching his sides as tears ran down his face. "It's probably karma, since you hit that duck" Kaneki snorted. "Sure it is. It's like some cheap horror movie! Revenge of the ducks!" Hide replied, starting to laugh all over again. "Come on Hide, we're gonna get sick if we don't change into some dry clothes." Kaneki laughed, taking Hide's hand and helping him up. Hide nodded, and the two began walking home together, holding hands the whole way.
