Emily and the Future

Four years ago today I put on the biggest and whitest dress I'd ever worn in my life. It's funny, I even remember the hour he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He was such a dork. The rooftop of the hospital served as our refuge from work. He texted me to meet him up there, making it sound like it was an emergency about Joyce. I opened the door and saw golden lights lining the ground and rows of flowers leading to a small table set for dinner. But more importantly, I saw him. Staring at me. My Micah Mouse.

"Good. You made it." He smirked. I smiled at the sound of his voice

"Micah! I…" There were no words! Everything was beautiful! He reached out for me and I folded myself into his embrace. "What's happening?" I said in his chest. Micah exhaled and touched his forehead to mine. "I need to ask you something. Desperately." I knew where this was going and my cheeks couldn't help but heat up. My hands immediately went to cover my face. "Micah! I can't believe this is happening."

"Emily, I'm not going to lie to you but I knew the moment I saw you in the stairwell, stuffing your face with ring-dings…..that you were the one for me." He took my hand.

"Micah," I blushed with a smile, "you're embarrassing me." He laughed and bent down on one knee. "Emily. I love you. I love your smile when I see you from across the room. I love the way your eyes light up when you buy new office supplies but most of all, I love how much you love your patients. You inspire me to be a better doctor, Emily. And a better man." He cleared his throat and looked down to take a deep breath. I laughed. "Yes." I whispered. He looked up confused, "What?"

I looked at his brown beautiful eyes and said, "Yes. I will marry you." He stood up, encircled my waist and with a smirk said, "I was just going to ask you if you wanted to eat outside or inside." I playfully smacked him on his arm, "shut up and kiss me." He did just that and then slid a sapphire stone ring on my finger.

Seeing that same ring now makes me smile every morning, especially knowing Micah is next to me when I wake up. My arm grazed the other side of our bed only to find it empty. I grabbed my robe and walked out to our living room. A wonderful aroma filled the room. A smell I instantly recognized. French Toast. I turned the corner and found Micah humming to himself in front of the stove. He was so cute and I couldn't resist walking up to him and wrapping my arms around him. "Good Morning Dr. Barnes." He said as he brought up his arm to rub mine. I smiled and said, "Good Morning….Dr. Barnes." He turned around to face me and kissed me. "Are you ready, my love?" I stared at him confused.

He turned back to the stove and placed the rest of the toast on a plate. "For your favorite!" I laughed. "Awesome! Set that plate in front of me!" I plopped down on a chair as he served me. "So…you know what day it is today don't you." He said with a wink. "I do." "Well, I got you something." "What? Micah! I said no gifts this year." "Ya but you're going to want this one because I'm going to tell you this incredibly funny story later after you open it." He ran into our room and came out with a wrapped box. "Ok. Go ahead." I stared at him in disbelief and grabbed the box. I tore the paper and threw it on the ground and opened what was inside. "Oh Micah!" I pulled up new post-its, new pens, and best of all, "a brand-new labelmaker?" I smiled and laughed. "Yes, see..that funny story I was going to tell you is um…..I broke your other one by accident."
