For all the hatred and discontent between the Slytherin and Gryffindor houses, Lily and Narcissa were the best of friends up until their fourth year of schooling. At the beginning of the year everything was fine, but then James started taking an interest in Lily and Narcissa began to notice Lucius as more than a friend. The young girls were still good friends at the beginning of their fifth year, even though both of them had boyfriends. But during their sixth year the Tom boy from Slytherin house began something that Lily saw as a cult. Countless Slytherins joined Tom's group and shunned muggle born wizards and witches such as Lily. Narcissa did not join this at first; in fact, she was so against joining that she left Lucius when he joined under the pressures of his friends.
Lily offered Narcissa much comfort in this time of need, equally dividing her time between her friend and her relationship with James which had escalated much in the past two years. Then Narcissa began spending the time when she wasn't with Lily with Lucius again and shortly after that she began attending meetings with Tom's cult. Lily knew Narcissa's sister, Bellatrix, followed the boy around like he was a god but she had thought Narcissa was built of better bricks. Apparently not. They began spending less time together and more time with James and Lucius. Narcissa's time when she wasn't at Tom's weekly meeting or in class was spent talking and listening to Lucius. Lily's time when she wasn't studying was spent with James personally or watching him play Quidditch. A game he was exceptionally skilled at. When their seventh year rolled around they vaguely missed each other's presence, but not to the extent of either one doing anything about it.
Lily maintained her relationship with James and when he asked for her hand in marriage Narcissa was nowhere close to being a worry in Lily's pretty head. And the same went for Narcissa, come her birthday in January, when Lucius asked her to marry him she said, "Yes!" without a thought to the future Mrs. Lily Potter. On the night Narcissa had a son and named him Draco, she hadn't thought of her old friend for almost a year. And a few months later when Harry was born Narcissa had been absent from Lily's mind for almost two years.
The night when James and Lily died for Harry at the hand of Tom Marvelo Riddle, who had by that time changed his name to Lord Voldemort, was the first time Narcissa thought of Lily in two years. She felt sadness at not being able to stop the death of her old friend but she didn't dare speak out against Tom for fear he would hurt Lucius or, worse, Draco. With a heavy heart, Narcissa lay down that night thinking of Lily and James Potter and the son that had been born to them mere months after her own child. Gone were the days when she could easily forget the name Lily, for it seemed, anymore when her thoughts became lax and her mind was allowed to roam, it roamed to a green eyed girl, with long brown hair and a loving smile. Narcissa's mind roamed to days long past when she had basked in innocence and love. Days where she had spent hours with that girl… Lily had been a flower in Narcissa's life of grey. A spark of color and brilliance where laughter was void during the time away from Lucius. Narcissa had spent the rainy days of her life with a touch of color, radiating off a Lily. A very rare flower in Narcissa's dark life.
