"Could not!"
"Could too!"
"Could not."
"Could too."
Guinevere smiled as she heard her husband and Merlin arguing playfully in the Dining Hall. Well, semi-playfully.
As she entered, they stop conversing and looked up at her.
"Ah, Guinevere," Arthur rose to greet her.
"Good morning, Arthur."
They both sat down and Merlin brought Gwen her breakfast.
"Well Guinevere, perhaps you can help us settle our little debate," Arthur spoke.
Gwen looked at Merlin the back at Arthur.
"I suppose I could," she said cheerfully. It was moments like these that made life so wonderful, she thought. The Kingdom was at peace, she was sitting at breakfast on a beautiful Saturday morning helping her beloved husband and her closest friend settle another one of their silly squabbles.
"What seems to be the problem?"
"Well," Merlin started to ramble, "I accidentally dropped a fruit tray on Arthur's head this morning and he said I was fumbling about like a lovestruck rabbit and I retorted, 'Well maybe I am in love.' Then he said, 'Oh please Merlin, as if you could actually get a girl to fall in love with you!' And then I said-"
"Merlin!" Arthur interrupted. He turned to his wife who was sitting with a smile on her face."The point is Merlin could never get a girl to fall in love with him." He smirked up at Merlin and took a drink.
"Of course he could." Gwen spoke up, "Why, I fell in love with him."
At this, Arthur's drink spewed from his mouth in a very unkingly way.
"What?" He choked.
"Oh, yeah." Merlin chimed in.
Arthur spread his hands and opened his mouth, but no words came out.
"It was when you first arrived in Camelot," Gwen spoke to Merlin, "I thought you were just wonderful."
"You thought Merlin was wonderful?" Arthur was hardly able to get the words out.
"Oh yes, I even kissed him."
"While I was in bed," Merlin added helpfully.
Arthur just stared at the two of them, mouth wide open, eyes bulging.
Merlin and Gwen laughed. Merlin gave Gwen a wink then headed out of the Dining Hall.
"Don't worry Arthur," Gwen rose from her chair and put her arms around her husband, "You're the only one for me."
Arthur looked up at her with a smile, one of his sincere ones, the ones that made Gwen's heart beat like it was trying to burst out of her chest.
"I know Guinevere."
Gwen kissed him on his cheek and he rose. They walked out to the garden hand in hand.
Yes, Gwen thought, it was definitely moments like these that made life so wonderful.
