Sweet Sorrow

"There goes the Peacemaker/An ex-policeman and a friend of mine/His whole life was never brining it home dealt with murder and fear on his own worked out of love worked out of rage getting shot at for minimum wage/He clings to his wife and kids revolver to reviver/He's always teaching them that love creates survivors/He and his girl are seeing the world just like it's always meant to be done/He sees her and she sees him all the rest is decoration."-Cowboy Mouth-"Peacemaker"
"There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves; it is not in my nature. My attachments are always excessively strong.-Jane Austen-"Northanger Abbey"
Lennie watched Rey walk out of the 2-7 for the last time as his partner. Lennie was overwhelmed with sadness at this loss. There weren't many people Lennie would claim to be close to, but he would with Rey.
Lennie turned to look at Anita who was standing in her office doorway watching Rey, watching Lennie. Even if Lennie hadn't seen the hug Anita gave Rey before he left, Lennie knew she was feeling the same way he was. His feelings were mirrored in her face.
Anita made a motion to Lennie with her head and Lennie followed her into her office.
Anita sat down at her desk and Lennie sat down across from it. He stared at his hands.
"Four years, Lieu..." Lennie began.
"I know. I know. And if I had told you four years ago that you'd someday miss Rey..."
"I would have laughed in your face," said Lennie looking up smiling at Anita despite his held back tears. "I rode him pretty hard back then. Mike had just been demoted. And Rey was such a rookie..."
Anita shook her head. "Lennie, whatever happened back then, it doesn't matter. You did wonders with Rey. He was so green, so inexperienced when he first came here. You taught him well. He became a good detective thanks to you."
Lennie smiled sadly. "Then why do I feel like I'm the one who learned a lot. The truth is, I'm getting older and those new detectives, they're getting younger and younger."
"But that's why you two made such a good team. You complimented each other," said Anita.
"What? You mean old and young?"
"I was going to say young and mature adult."
Lennie and Anita shared a laugh. They were both trying to keep the mood light and yet somehow failing. The mood turned solemn again.
"Debra's MS is getting worse. The girls will soon be left without their Mom. And it'll be hard on Rey. He hates to see her suffer. He loves her," said Lennie.
"And that's why we'll be there for him."
Lennie nodded at Anita's words. "He's just such a good person, Lieu. I wish I were half as good. He's a devoted husband, father, and friend. He was there for me when I lost my own daughter, Cathy. He took me in for that week following her death. He made certain I wasn't alone, that I was taken care of. Rey was probably scared I'd do something to myself. Ya, know, he would sacrifice himself if it could save someone one moment of sorrow. I used to think, how could someone be that good. His goodness and integrity have always amazed me but that's just the kind of guy he is."
Anita wiped at her eyes. "I think what I'm going to miss most is being called 'L.T.'"
Lennie and Anita laughed.
Anita fingered the file lying on her desk. She would tell Lennie about his new partner tomorrow. Today, it was just too painful for Lennie, and for herself. Anita looked at her watch.
"Lennie, it's time for us to get out of here. What'da ya say we go and get a drink. The club sodas are on me."
Lennie smiled. "Sounds great."
Anita slipped on her jacket and followed Lennie out of her office. Her eyes fell one the folder lying on her desk as she closed the door. She wondered what Lennie's new partner, Detective Green, would bring to her precinct.
