Kisses Howl in the Night

--

Sometimes at night, she could still hear Duran howling out a war song to the wind as he raced over land, weaving and dodging all obstacles in his path.

Sometimes at night, she felt like she was Duran. Feeling free and simply part of nature with nothing to worry about other than the essentials: food, shelter…mate.

Sometimes at night, she would wake up from this wonderful dream calling out Duran's name, hoping against hope that he would answer her call; that he would be her loyal partner once again.

Sometimes at night, disappointed emerald green eyes would gaze out over the dark room she slept in, realizing that though she still retained the quick reflexes and healing abilities of a HiME, she was now alone without her Child, Duran.

Sometimes at night, when the pain of loneliness felt too much like a cage with no key to unlock it, she would call Duran's other HiME; the one that completed her requirements for the wolf Child to finally be fully grown, the one that was her most precious person.

Sometimes at night, she would sit on the edge of her bed, lights off, just listening to the phone ring and ring until finally someone answered. No, not someone…she. Until she answered.

Sometimes at night, she would feel guilty for calling so late; especially when the Kyoto accent on the other end was groggy and rougher from just being woken up.

Sometimes at night, she would just sit there in bed and hold the phone to her ear, saying nothing, just listening as she spoke softly until the shores of dreams called to her once again and the phone let loose gentle even breaths of sleep.

Sometimes at night, she clutched the phone to her all night and did not sleep because she did not want to miss a moment with her, even if she was fast asleep.

Sometimes at dawn, she would hear the warning beep of her phone. The battery was on its last bar and fading fast.

Sometimes at dawn, she would sigh, sad that her connection to her was being severed until she met up with her later that day for lunch.

Every dawn she stayed up listening to her breathing in peaceful slumber, she would whisper affections and promises through the airwaves hoping they landed in her dreams.

"I love you Shizuru."

Every dawn, before her phone died, Natsuki would press her lips to the speaker and blow her beautiful girlfriend a kiss, along with a good morning.

Sometimes at dawn, the Kyoto native wasn't asleep.

Sometimes at dawn, she responded.

"Good morning, Natsuki…I love you very much."

Sometimes at dawn, she could barely get the words out because she was so choked with emotion.

Sometimes, Shizuru and Natsuki just can't stand to be apart from each other for too long, so they make sure their phones are charging all day just so the next night they need contact, they can stay together until morning.

After all, Natsuki only has one semester left until the phones are no longer needed to stay together through the evening. Shizuru has invited Natsuki to come live with her during college and Natsuki wouldn't even let Shizuru finish asking before taking her hand and bringing it to her lips for a gentle kiss.

"I can't wait to properly kiss you good morning."
