(A/N: I tried to post this yesterday in honor of March 1st [aka the day of the spring formal dance], but FFnet wouldn't let me upload anything. So happy belated March 1st. Enjoy!)
The Ruined Day
The day is nothing like Henry planned. It started out sunny and warm, the perfect day for a picnic and a walk outside with Natalie.
As soon as they sit down on the picnic blanket and Henry begins putting out food, the rain starts. Within minutes, the sunny, warm day turns into a drizzly, gray day, then to a pouring rain, black day. Henry groans as he tries to save the food from destruction. It doesn't work.
Natalie sees Henry's frustration and says, "It's not raining that hard," even though it is. "Why don't we walk?"
So they do, but Henry refuses to let himself say anything. It was supposed to be the perfect day, and the rain ruined it. He sighs and squeezes Natalie's hand tighter.
Natalie takes Henry's face in her hands, forcing him to look at her, and asks, "What's wrong?"
Henry tries to distract himself from the ruined day by focusing on Natalie—the curly, wet hair sticking to her face, the rain dripping down her nose, the concerned expression encouraging him to explain. "It's just…" he pauses, takes Natalie's hand in his own. "I was going to ask you to marry me today. And we were going to have a picnic, and I was going to show you the ring, and it was going to be perfect, and…"
"Wait. Go back."
"We were going to have a picnic."
"Farther back."
"Ohh…yeah. I was going to ask you to marry me today."
"Yes," Natalie agrees.
"Yes what?"
"Yes, I'll marry you, Henry."
Henry isn't totally sure what to say. "Okay. I mean, that's great! So you're not mad about the ruined picnic or…"
Luckily, before he can make a bigger fool of himself, Natalie kisses him.
