Title: When the War Came

And the war came with a curse and a caterwaul

And the war came with all the poise of a cannonball

And they're picking out our eyes by coal and candlelight

When the war came, the war came hard.

Okay, so this was originally a one-shot, but as I wrote it I thought of how I could expand it. I'm not quite sure if I will or not. S'alright, s'okay. S'okay, s'alright.

I don't own Fullmetal Alchemist. Nor do I own the two Decemberists songs featured in this story. Cookies if you can guess which two. Meggie and Reginald are mine, back off.

Meggie sat perched on the fence, back to the road and munching an apple. Finishing, she threw the core to a horse in the pasture and looked to the sky. It was a beautiful day today. A beautiful day to sit waiting on a fence. Why she was waiting, she didn't know. Who, what, where, and when, but not why. Yawning slightly, she reached for the sky and her shirt went up just slightly, exposing a bit of bare back.

A small thwap was heard, and suddenly Meggie shrieked, jerking forward but not falling off the fence. Growling, she spun around and glared at the soldier approaching her. "I haven't seen you in almost a year and that's how you greet me!" she yelled at the twenty-three-year-old. Jumping off the fence, she fished in her pocket and pulled out a rubber band of her own. Pausing for a moment to aim, she let her own projectile fly.

It missed horribly. The soldier looked over his shoulder then looked back, smirking. "Were you aiming at the tree?"

Getting up from her crouch, Meggie sent the soldier a look that could kill. "One of these days I'll hit you, Reginald."

Reginald continued to smirk. "But by saying that you are implying that you will hit me one day out of all the days in your life." He finally reached the fifteen-year-old and patted her on the head. "Shorty."

Meggie batted his hand away. "Hey, I grew! And you have no right to call me shorty! Girls are naturally shorter then guys!"

"Yeah, but you seem shorter then usual. Which implies that I grew, and you didn't."

"No, it just implies that I grew less then you did! How much did you grow?"

Reginald put a hand to his chin in a mock evaluating look. "Well, I'd say about an inch, which is about how much shorter you seem."

"Bastard."

"At your service."

Meggie leaned against the fence, a too-good-to-be-true smile on her face. "Oh by the way, I have a present for you."

Reginald leaned in closer. "Really?"

Meggie shifted ever so slightly, and bumped the transmutation circle carved into the fence. A blue light shone, and a giant hand popped out of the ground and grabbed Reginald. "Damn you Shorty!"

Meggie ran down the road laughing. "I hope you like it! If you're not out in ten minutes all the pie will be gone!"

Reginald sighed, trying to get a hand to his pocket where his chalk lay. Definitely an Elric.

Meggie ran hard, knowing it wouldn't be long before Reginald was free. Definitely a Mustang.

It's been a year or more

Since they shipped me to this foreign shore,

Fighting in a foreign war,

So far away from my home.
