November 30
Dear All of the Elders,
I know you have been watching me for the past year. I also know that you will give me a job that I am suited for. I do not doubt either of these. I have seen you taking notes as the Elevens play in the square. I have seen you paging through the grade book. No, I know you will make a good decision on my Assignment. But that does not stop me from being anxious. So I decided to send you this letter.
I know you have kept track of all the volunteering that I have done over the years. So you probably know that I have not favored one place. That is because the Assignment that I want you cannot volunteer for. I would most like to be a genetic engineer.
I would greatly enjoy this Assignment. I don't have quite enough patience for the nurturing center or the house of the old. I would be bored at the Fishery. And would hate being a birthmother. Being a genetic engineer would be really fun for me. Not that you wouldn't think of a fun job anyway but this would be especially fun I could even contribute some new ideas.
For example I could genetically alter people so the Stirrings would never happen. Or I could find a way to keep our birthmothers from producing twins. There are so many things I could do and I'd do my best on all of them.
Still If you don't Assign me to the Genetic Engineering department you will probably find me something better for me so I'll trust you to find me the right job.
Cordially,
Lara Elizabeth Zysman
