Matt smiled slyly as he gently traced invisible shapes on his lover's bare back. She rolled over halfway to stop him from tickling her. Emily slowly reached up, ran her hand along his jaw, tucked her hand under his chin and gently brought his face to hers. Their lips locked in an intense kiss. The need for oxygen was the only thing that caused Matt to pull away. When he did, Emily was able to gaze into his eyes. Eyes that were deep chocolate in color-eyes that were warm and unpretentious–eyes that she could get lost in for hours.
Emily broke the gaze first, burying her face in his chest. Matt smiled as she snuggled closer to him-trying to get as close as humanly possible. After a minute, Emily looked up. Matt was staring at her so intently it brought chills to her spine.
"What? You look like you want to say something," Matt prompted.
"I just- I've been thinking. Life's-too short for regrets. It's too-precious."
Matt smiled curiously, "What do you regret doing?"
"Nothing. It's just- I'm afraid of regretting something I didn't do," Emily took a deep breath, "I lied. It wasn't 'thank you' that I wanted to tell you."
"It was an 'I love you'," Matt finished for her.
Emily nodded, anxious, worried, yet hopeful.
When they started their 'relationship' it was casual-just sex. Partners with benefits, if you will. But now, it was more than that. It was special. It was a connection- physically, and spiritually. At least for her. She was pretty sure Matt felt the same way- she hoped.
"Matthew Flannery, I love you. I want to be with you-more than I've ever wanted anything else," Emily admitted.
Matt smiled. He had been hoping she'd say those words for days-months. When they first started hooking up, she was the first to say "It's just sex"- he hadn't believed it when he said it and he definitely hadn't believed it when she said it. He felt it from the first kiss- there was something there, a special spark. He had never felt anything like it before-he knew it was real.
"Good," he said with a grin, "Because I need you in my life- I can't- function without you… I can't work, I can't think… When you're not by my side, all I can do is count the seconds until we're together again. Emily, I-I love you," Matt said finally.
Emily looked away, embarrassed, as her eyes filled with tears. Matt was not the first guy to tell her that he loved her, nor was he the first one to bring her to tears. She had been through her share of bad relationships-she hadn't quite mastered getting out without getting hurt. But Matt would never hurt her-he was incapable of that.
Emily grinned, "So, uh, what do we do now?"
Matt laughed, "I don't know. But I kinda want to say it again."
"Me too."
