Fortune Cookie Fun
"What does your fortune read, Sarah Jane? What vague clue to your future does this little cookie hold?" The Doctor chuckled, toothy grin on full display. The pair had found themselves back at UNIT Headquarters, having a quite uneventful Chinese dinner for a change of pace.
"Nothing really..." Sarah flippantly replied to the Doctor's teasing, as she moved to place the paper in the trash.
"Oh no you don't!" The Doctor grabbed at Sarah's wrist, effectively stalling her movement as he plucked the small slip of waxy paper from her lax grasp. He was determined to poke fun at the sure-to-be humorous line of superstitious print. "The evening promises romantic interests." The Doctor read aloud as he scanned the paper, his grin falling, only to return shortly after.
"I'm sure we can get that pup Harry back over here for a good time." The Doctor joked, toying with the double meaning that could be gleaned from the unassuming text. Sarah reached across the small table to snatch back the silly fortune. "I'd thank you not to." She huffed, avoiding eye contact with the Doctor.
"Why not, I'm sure he'd be happy to oblige." The Doctor pressed his point. He realized that this conversation was wandering into dangerous territory, but was far too involved to do anything to change it's course.
"I'm perfectly happy with the company I have now." Sarah Jane looked up at the Doctor with a warm smile. As the silence drew out, the Doctor found that it wasn't uncomfortable in the least. And Sarah noted how his grin softened and managed to look less mad, and simply happy and at ease. It was a smile she liked very much.
The Doctor dropped his hand and the fortune back to the table and covered Sarah's small hand with his larger hand.
"My sentiment exactly." And his grin practically lit up the room.
End A/N: My newest love, Doctor Who and Sarah Jane! Obviously this wonderful gets my sad, strange attempt at a tribute, and most likely many others. This is just some short and simple fluff to work on getting the characters right, since I plan on writting much more for these two! Hope you enjoyed.
