A.N. OneShot Jesse St James Drabble. I'm a Finchel or Puckleberry fan normally, but this just popped up in my brain, and I had to write it down. Plus, I love Jonathon Groff. Review, s'il vous plait!
"Meet me in the parking lot".
Jesse snapped his phone shut and threw it on the seat next to him. Sitting in his range rover, he panicked about what he was about to do.
When Rachel and Shelby eventually met, Jesse had known that he would soon be going back to Carmel High. Mother and daughter had been reunited; he had done the job that he was meant to and now, Shelby said, he could come back where he belonged. Truth be told, Jesse had enjoyed his time at New Directions with Rachel. He was only supposed to 'befriend' Rachel (but he decided that 'seduce' was the better option) and get close to her, but the minute that he had sung with her in the music store he knew that they had instant chemistry. She was dramatic and bossy, sure, but so was he. He could tell that she felt it, too, by the way that she was looking at him.
When he had transferred to William McKinley, he knew that he had Rachel right where he wanted her. She was smitten – and he was getting some make out action as a bonus – but mostly he enjoyed talking to her. They talked and talked about their favourite performers, their favourite musicals, whether Elphaba or Glinda was the best character in Wicked. He missed the sound of her laugh, the smell of her hair, the softness of her hand intertwined in his.
Jesse was startled by a sharp knock on his door. Shelley, a member of Vocal Adrenaline, was motioning for him to wind down his window. Annoyed, Jesse did so.
"Jesse, let's go, she just left the building".
Well, thought Jesse, this is it.
He grabbed the egg that he had been keeping safe in his cup-holder. He knew that this would kill her; Rachel was a vegan and adamantly believed that the souls of the little baby chicks lived inside the eggs and died when the eggs were broken. He knew that the feeling of all of the eggs on her body would make her want to be sick. This was the first time in a long time that Jesse actually hated himself.
He stood out in the parking lot and saw her turn the corner. When she saw him, her face lit up and his heart sunk. He wanted her to call him names, to punch him, to hate him; it would make all of this easier. But he was Vocal Adrenaline through and through, and this was how they did it: you were either in or out.
She ran towards him and stopped a couple of feet in front of him. She opened her mouth to speak, but her words were cut short when the first egg hit her back. As each egg hit her, Jesse could see the physical and emotional pain becoming etched further and further into her face. It killed him, really, it did. That he was hurting her, that he was causing her pain, and that this would end their relationship for good and send her running back to Finn. She looked up at him, anger and hurt showing in her brown eyes, acutely aware of what was coming. Her eyes flicked from his face to the egg in his hand, and back again. He walked slowly towards her so that his team mates couldn't hear what he was saying. He was so close to her, and had to fight very hard to resist the urge to kiss her.
"Go ahead. Do it. Break it like you broke my heart"
Jesse tried to hide the hurt and self-loathing in his voice, but he just couldn't. For the first time, Jesse St James had his heart broken, too. What made it worse was that it was entirely his own fault.
"I loved you".
And then he broke the egg, and Rachel's heart. He
