It's different When it's Happening To You
Chapter One
I pushed the door open slowly, hoping it wouldn't creak. There was a part of me ready to tell Logan, and the other part wanted to crawl into bed and hide under the covers. He doesn't know that I had a doctors appointment, he doesn't know something is wrong. He should know, but I can't bring myself to tell him.
All I want is my mother.
After we moved to California, it became much harder to get through the day. That sounds a little overboard, but my mom was always the one I would tell things to first. The one that knew everything and told me what would be best to do.
And even though I have a daughter and son of my own now, my mother is the one I need.
Logan was in his office typing like a mad person on the computer. His face looked strained; frustrated. I thought about not telling him, that it wasn't a good time. But if I didn't tell him now, and told him later, he wouldn't be happy with me.
"Where's Devon and Alexander?"
"Oh, Rory, you scared me," he murmured "Devon is sleeping and Alexander is at his friends house."
"Well," I said, procrastinating "which friend?"
"I don't know, tall brown hair."
"You mean Ethan?" I said sitting in the reclining chair.
"Yeah," he was typing again "Edger."
"Ethan."
"Right."
"Logan, what's going on?"
"You tell me." He finally looked up from the computer. "Where have you been, I called the office but they said you had already left. And your cell phone was off."
"Yeah, sorry about that. I had a doctor's appointment."
"What? Why? You were just at the doctor's."
"Logan, I have cancer."
"What? Rory is this some kind of sick joke? Because if it is it's not funny." I couldn't speak, my throat thickened, my mouth became dry. And then the tears I had been trying to hold back spilled over one by one. I shook my head.
Logan was up in an instant, holding me to his chest. My tears soaked into his shirt as he held me tighter. He tucked my face under his chin, and I wanted to stay like this forever.
I could hear a window creek from upstairs. Devon.
"You can't escape being a parent for long." I pulled away from Logan kissing him quickly whipping my face and running upstairs.
"Devon!" I yelled, she was leaning out the window talking to some body. Devon at age thirteen is completely obsessed with boys. And she was talking to one out the window.
Logan came in behind me, whispering in my ear. "What's going on?"
"There's some boy outside, can you get rid of him?" He was gone in a second. Devon had closed the window and was staring at me arms crossed across her chest. I closed the door.
"Devon, what's going on?"
"I like him Mom, okay?" she sighed and sat on her bed.
"Devon," I smiled "why don't you just call him. Look, your father wouldn't understand, or at least he would pretend he doesn't. But here's the deal. You have phone privileges till ten. But if your grades slip, you get crabby with me, or I get calls from other kid's parents, I'll make it nine. Okay?"
"Wait," she looked at me straight in the eyes "I only have phone privileges till nine now."
"Are you sure?" I raised my eye brows watching a smile come across her face.
"Thank you Mom, thank you!" she hugged me and then went to pick up her phone. "Wait, why are you letting me do this?"
"What do you mean?"
"You normally, well, you don't ever let me do anything like this. It's likeā¦. antidestablishmenterrainism"
"I realize, that life is short, live every second. And I think you have antdestablishmenterrainism confused with an oxymoron."
"What's going on?" She whispered.
"More then you know."
Authors note: So it's sort of a one shot, but it's a cliff hanger so I will write more. Please R&R!
