"I just have to take care of things here, and then I'll be right there. I'll just meet Emma outside of the building. Don't worry about her parents, they're strong people. Okay, I'll see you there."
He turned off the phone and walked back in, going to the same seat he had before. He paid little attention to what was being said. Manny crying on the phone was the only thing he was hearing. Eventually the service ended, and people started walking out. His father had already been to temple on Friday night, so he was on his own. He remained in his seat for several minutes before finally standing.
Toby looked over the synagogue. Everyone had already left, it seemed their thoughts and plans were elsewhere. He took a bit his lower lip and started walking.
"Darcy once said that God was like the sun, in that even if he was obscured by something that you could always know he was there." He took a deep breath and stopped in place.
"And just standing here, thinking about everything, witnessing everything you've made, I can truly say what complete load of crap that really is. Because while you may have convinced everyone about how loving and compassionate you are, let's not kid yourselves, you're just a prick."
Toby took off his glasses and stared forward at the windows dozens of feet away.
"You know why Liberty was leaving earlier this morning? She said she was going to see her son. Her son. And now after that car accident you sent her way, she has a damned good chance of dying. Am I supposed to be impressed with your grand plan? Your sense of humor? She's a decent girl who simply wanted to see her child, and you decide to do this, simply due to her unforgivable sins right?" A small, but bitter chuckle came out.
"Oh, I understand with Rick, you had to punish him for what he had done, and thus a bullet went through his body, all while three innocent kids got to watch him die. Fine."
He held his hands against the back of his head.
"And JT? Oh, well he lied a few times, dealt drugs once, and overdosed, he just doesn't deserve to keep living now does he? Who cares about an elderly woman losing her grandson, a girl losing her boyfriend, or a child losing his father," he screamed. "James Tiberius Yorke committed a sin, didn't he?"
He sat down, and leaned his head against the seat in front of him. He breathed deeply, rubbing his hands over his face, but no tears came.
"Why do I get close to these people, only for you to take them away? How have I angered you? When did I displease you, huh?" He stood and looked up. "What have I done?! Yeah, I've lied, I've lusted, I've envied, I've let rage get the better of me, I admit it."
He began walking towards the front of the temple. "But I befriended Rick, I forgave JT, I didn't hurt Spinner, Jay, or Lakehurst and I damn well wanted to, I tried to help Liberty when she needed it. Did none of that matter to you? Does it ever? What do I have to do?"
He looked down and sighed. A minute passed. Then another. Finally, Toby looked up and put his glasses on.
You know what? I don't care anymore. I don't want to live like this. You want to test a person's faith? Find someone else, I 'm not going to be your Job anymore."
He started walking back to the exit, each step quicker and harder than the last. He finally reached the end and took one last look back.
"I don't want your judgment, I don't want your plan and I... to hell with you, you bastard."
Toby spit on the floor and walked out of the building.
