Into the Dawn
Chihiro stood on the human side of the tunnel, staring through the darkness. Every night she snuck out to come here, for six years it had been like this. She never crossed back to the spirit world. He'd told her not to. Not to return. He feared that if she did, she would not be able to go back to her own world. And so in the darkness, they stood on their separate sides of the tunnel, staring at each other's dark silhouettes. Each night they would talk for awhile. Chihiro just wished she could see him better. But the tunnel was so long and so dark, all she could see was his shape. Haku promised that one day though, he would be able to hold her. One day, he would fly her through the stars. But for now, neither of them could cross to each others world. Each night, Chihiro hoped and prayed that this would be the night that they would stand only inches apart.
Leaning against the cool brick wall she waited silently for the sound of Haku's sandals. She waited for the sight of his shadow. And at last it came. Instead of stopping at the wall though, he continued walking, straight through the tunnel. Chihiro stood up straight now, her heart pounding, her mouth suddenly dry. This was the night. The night they would truly see each other once more. She couldn't speak, couldn't make a sound. She couldn't move. She felt so frozen in her place as she waited. At last he was before her.
Catching her breath, she stared up into his eyes. They stared warmly back into her own. They were silent for a moment.
"You're finally here…." She finally managed to whisper.
Haku took her into his arms. He held her tight, resting his chin on top of her head. "And I'm here to stay." He replied.
Chihiro felt tears of relieved joy spill from her eyes. "I'm so glad…" She whispered.
Haku let her go and stepped back. Chihiro waited. Within a blink of an eye he transformed into the gleaming white dragon that had saved her when she was small. She climbed on top of him and he took off through the cool night air. They flew to the sky and through the glittering stars. Now they could see the sun was just beginning to rise. The two of them disappeared into the dawn, and Chihiro prayed that if this was only a dream, that she would not awaken.
