the days

Neville and Luna and the days that could have been - freeverse poem for the Freeverse Competition

-.-

Neville never lived up to the Gryffindor expectations

Because he was

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM

And he was clumsy

And awkward

And shy

And everything that a Gryffindor was not

He heard the whispers

("Should've been in Hufflepuff")

And it hurts to know that they were /right/

That the red on his tie should be replaced with yellow

But it makes him eager to prove himself

He just doesn't know how

-.-

Her sanity is questionable in the eyes of everyone else

She had always been different

By believing in the impossible creatures she had been told stories about

- NaRgLeS -

- CrUmPlEd HoRn SnOrCaCk -

- BlIbBeRiNg HuMdInGeR -

But they couldn't expect her to not believe in what she was raised to believe in.

Could they?

Maybe they were the ones who were /i/n/s/a/n/e

Not right in the head

Mad

LOONY

Maybe they were the ones with questionable sanity

-.-

It takes a war and lots of death for them to come together

It should've happened sooner

After all, they were so similar

(Both outcasts for being different to everyone else)

And it's Harry who congratulates them first

With tired eyes and an older face but with an honest smile

And then it's Ron

And then it's Ginny

And then it's Hermione

And then it's Seamus

And then it's Parvati

And then it's Padma

And then everyone else

Because everyone is happy

And there's not much time be happy about at the minute

So Neville and Luna let them be happy for a minute

Just a minute

Because they deserve it

(They especially deserved it)

-.-

They get serious fast

-Very fast-

And it all comes crashing down when Luna travels to write a book about the creatures she loves

Neville's expecting it

When her letters get shorter

And her visits less often

He asks her what his name is

And she doesn't lie

"Rolf Scammander"

Neville hopes Rolf makes Luna happy

-.-

Neville tries to forget her

He honestly does

He even gets a new girlfriend

In the form of Hannah Abbot

In order to forget about her

And he's doing a good job until her book comes out

It becomes an instant bestseller

So Neville buys a copy

(For old time's sake)

And his efforts are ruined when he reads the first page

For my Mum

And Neville, for encouraging me to write about the wonderful things that once made me 'Loony'

Hannah pretends not to notice how often he reads that page

-.-

He loves Hannah

He really does

But it comes nowhere close to the love he has for Luna

He looks at his son and his daughter

And wonders what it would be like for them to have

Dirty blonde hair

Or

Silver grey eyes

But then he regrets it because he would never change his children

Never

Even if he does love Luna more than their mother

Sometimes, he feels lonely

Lonely because Hannah isn't Luna

Because Luna left him

Because Luna wasn't here

And he felt like the frightened little Badger in Lion's fur once again

Wondering what had been

And what could have been
