Heavens Would Cry

By: Karasu Kyra

Sakura Haruno sighed and looked through the branches toward the twenty-five year old Naruto Uzumaki. He stood before the memorial stone clothed in black. His head was bowed and he was most likely crying. His blue eyes then looked up at her, and she shared the sadness that was within them, for she was also dressed in black.

"I miss him, Sakura," said the blonde, quietly.

"Naruto…"

Sakura walked forward and around the stone so that she was standing beside him. She reached out and took his hand, lacing their fingers.

"Being here," the man said, glancing at the three tree stumps behind them, "brings back a lot of memories. Memories of when we were happy. Before…"

"Maybe he had fond memories here, too. Back before Academy, when he trained, when Itachi was still alive."

The hand in hers tightened and she glanced vibrant green orbs to Naruto.

"Naruto," Sakura began, but couldn't finish.

"What, Sakura?"

"Naruto…you've been distant since…"

Naruto was silent and both stared at the memorial stone. Somewhere in the distance thunder could be heard and then a dim flash of lighting sent a glare across the polished rock.

"Sakura, when he died, a part of me died with him. He was my rival and more importantly, my best friend. He made me what I am today. By leaving, by getting stronger…he pushed me, as well."

"We're the new Sannin. We each trained under the old Sannin. I under Tsunade, you under Jaraiya, and…he…under Orochimaru."

"Yeah, so?"

"Tsunade became Hokage, you will become Hokage. Your coronation is in three weeks. They told me to tell you."

Something flashed in Naruto's azure eyes. Sakura would have called it hope if his eyes hadn't looked so lifeless. He gave a humorless smile and looked at her.

"Yeah? Too bad," be bit out the next word as if it burned him to say it, "Sasuke, isn't here to see it. I told that bastard I'd be Hokage someday."

Sakura just gave a quick half-smile.

The blonde turned to her then. "Why? Why did I have to kill him? Why did he let me?"

"He had no reason left to live, after killing his brother."

"What about us? Weren't we enough?"

"No. Sasuke has always lived for Itachi. And when he found out that Itachi loved him, that he was ordered to kill the Uchiha, he hated himself even more. He killed Itachi, the one he loved like no other. You killed Sasuke, whom you love as much as he loved Itachi." Sakura paused and then added, " He always was a drama-queen."

Naruto half-smiled.

Sakura sighed. "I have work to do. I can't wait for the dead."

Her hand left his and the sound of her footsteps were a cadence to his uneven breaths. The air grew thicker as rain drew closer. And like a faucet opening in the sky, it began to rain.

"And the Heavens would cry for him," whispered Naruto, before turning and walking without a backward glance.
