Halley Wolowitz's POV
I fumbled around with my fingers together nervously. What awaits me will change my entire future. And I am so not ready for that. I pace back and forth on the tiled and white floors of my bathroom. I live in an apartment in Boston, Massachusetts. I'm twenty four years old so I can afford that. I'm a bioengineer and work for this company called Ginkgo Bioworks.
It's pretty cool. Living out here on my own instead of the other side of America that is the sunny Pasadena, California. I had to leave my family behind in order to work here after I graduated from college. It was such a very hard and teary eyed move for myself and my parents, but it was something I wanted to do. And they allowed me to do it. To achieve my dreams.
I've been living here great. I have a great job and boyfriend. I Video Chat my parents sometimes. It was like everything was going well...
Except for this.
This part of my life I haven't planned.
I'm staring down at the white stick that I have on my sink counter. To tell me if I'm positive or negative. As in pregnancy. I can't be having a baby right now! I'm not ready! I don't think I can be a mother!
Seeing the result on the test made my worst fears come true.
I am pregnant.
I wanted to cry. I can't believe it. Me...pregnant? My boyfriend, Jason, and I always use protection. We were always careful. But this time, not so much, I guess. Looks like I'm pregnant and have to face the consequences.
What will my parents think?
My little brother, Neil, he would be an uncle.
Maybe it's safest to tell him about it first.
Mom will be for later. Don't let her small size and her cute and squeaky voice deceive you. She can be quite scary when she's mean, actually.
Before I announce this...this news to everyone, I need to absorb it myself. I have to tell Jason about it first and see how he'll handle it. Yeah. That sounds like a good idea to do first. I should tell the father, obviously.
After crying for some time, I pulled myself together. In my bedroom, I dialed Jason's phone number and prayed he would answer quickly. After four agonizing rings, he finally answered.
"Hey, Halley." I hear his familiar voice on the other line. It made me smile a little despite the situation.
"Hi, Jason." I said and even my voice sounds weak from all the crying and being upset. I have the same squeaky and high pitched voice just like my mother. It's something we both got and my brother and I got the loudness from my father's side being a Wolowitz and all.
"What's wrong?" Jason detected something was wrong with me immediately. "You don't sound like yourself."
"There is something I need to tell you." I began.
"No one died in your family, did they? Your parents and Neil are okay? ...And alive?" I had to chuckle a little at that.
"They're all fine, Jason. It's just that...I'm not."
"What do you mean? Are you sick?" He asked with worry.
"I'm pregnant." I revealed.
There was a long pause on the phone. It was so long I had to check if we were still on talking with each other which we were, thankfully. I thought he hung up. I was beginning to get nervous for his long lack of silence. I didn't know what to do and I don't know how he was feeling.
"Jason? Are you okay?" I was afraid for his response.
"You're...pregnant?" He managed to say through his shock. "As in...pregnant with a baby? With my baby? Ours?"
"Yes," I nodded. "I know this wasn't what we planned, but looks like we have a little...uh...surprise." I tried to sound happy, but even I can't fake that.
"A-a-are you sure you're pregnant?" He asked and was still in disbelief.
"Yes. The test says I am. What are we going to do?" I asked feeling hopeless, lost, and confused. I hate to admit that I want my own parents.
"I-I don't know...I need to think about this." Jason replied, sounding stressed. I can't blame him. This is a lot to take in.
"Okay. Um...I'll have to go to the doctor's, I guess." I told him.
"Yeah. You should. Maybe it's wrong."
"I took two of them, Jason. They're both positive."
"Oh..." He said in disappointment. "Well...let me know what the doctor says, okay?"
"Okay. We'll get through this." I tried to encourage him for us to still work.
"Yeah." He agreed.
"That's all I wanted you to know. I told you first." I said.
"Thanks, Halley."
"Well...bye, Jason. I'll let you know what else happens."
"Okay. Bye, Halley." He said and was the first to hung up.
It was only after I ate my dinner, I decided to Video Chat my brother, Neil. My friends asked me if I wanted to hang out, but I didn't. I couldn't knowing that I'm pregnant and miserable and depressed about it. I had to let my brother know. He was the safest choice next to my father. My mother won't be too happy about this.
On my laptop's screen, was the face of my brother, Neil. He's a year younger than me and lives in Pasadena. He still chose to live where my parents are. Not in their house or anything, but close. I always joked and teased him when we were younger that he was such a Mommy's boy which is still true to this day. He's even a microbiologist just like her. Neil was named after my father's favorite singer, Neil Diamond. The funny thing is, my brother doesn't really like his music.
"Hey, Halles. What's up?" Neil asked. "This is a pleasant surprise to hear from you."
"I even have more surprising news." I grumbled.
"Such as...?" He drifted off wanting to know more.
"I'm pregnant."
"Woah," He was taken aback for a second. "That's serious. Are you sure?"
"Yes. I just peed on the stupid stick-"
He was disgusted then. "Okay, Halley, no need to get all graphic."
I rolled my eyes. "What am I going to do?"
"Did you tell Jason for starters?"
"Yes."
"And what?"
"He needed to think about it."
"Well...as long as he's thinking, that's good. What about Mom and Dad? Did you tell them? They don't even like Jason."
"I know, but I don't care about that. I haven't told them, but I'm too scared to for obvious reasons," Then I added thoughtfully. "Maybe I should go to the doctor's first to have a one hundred percent confirmation. What do you think?"
"Yeah, that sounds good. Don't want Dad to get a heart attack and to have Mom kill Jason."
"Yeah..." I agreed.
Our mother is like a Mama bear. Always watches out for her cubs. When I was younger, I always thought she hated me and Neil. I knew she didn't want kids in the first place and I discovered that Neil was a surprise. Our relationship had it's ups and downs, but honestly, she is still the best mother I can ever ask for.
"I can go over there right now if Jason won't man up and help you with this." Neil vowed, looking at me seriously.
"No, don't. Let him have time to himself about this. Besides, Jason is taller than you and Dad. You won't be that much of a threat." I teased lightly with a smirk of my own.
"I can still fight him in the Jedi style."
"Yeah, right." I rolled my eyes.
"Are you okay about this?" He asked sincerely caring. Jokes and teasings aside.
"No, but I have no choice to, right? I should keep the baby." I answered.
"That does sound the right thing to do," He said thoughtfully. "Are you and Jason going to get married?"
"One thing at a time there, Neil." I warned. I'm definitely not ready for that. I do love Jason, but to...marry him? That's huge.
"Sorry. It just seems like the thing to ask," He apologized. "You know, like the social convention, as Dad puts it."
"Yeah. Anyway, that's all the surprising news I have."
"Really? I was hoping that you were going to say your hot friend, Danielle, is single."
A smile came on my face. "She's out of your league, Neil. Sorry to break it to you."
"Really? I don't think she is," Of course he doesn't. "I've dated your other friend, Crystal." He reminded me and I groaned.
"The worst four months and seven days of my life."
"The best four months of my life," Neil said the opposite with a grin. He was unbelievable. "Let me know if you're pregnant, okay? And if Jason will help out."
"I will. Mom and Dad will have to wait."
"Yeah. That's better. I'll have to talk to you later, Halley." He told me.
"Okay," I said. My tone was ending this conversation. "Bye, Neil. Thanks for listening."
"Thanks for making me an uncle." He smiled.
"Don't go announcing it to everyone." I said firmly.
"I won't," He promised.
"Good."
"Bye, Halley." He said and left the chat.
So, I have two people out of the way. I still can't believe I'm pregnant. Hopefully, the doctor's will prove me wrong.
