Amy Farrah Fowler Comes Out As A Feminist
Dinner at Sheldon's mother Mary's house was as quiet as usual, but marked by a certain tension. Although Amy Farrah Fowler had attended dinner at Mary's house before, now that she and Sheldon were married Amy had been more accepted by Mary; the trouble was, Amy was not certain Mary would accept her if she knew her completely. Perhaps the best course of action was to just blurt it out? Well, probably it wasn't really, but in any case that is what Amy Farrah Fowler ended up doing.
"I want you to know I'm a feminist," she said suddenly, looking up from her plate.
Mary did not frown. She did not raise her eyebrows. She simply and calmly said, "So in other words, you kill babies and practice witchcraft."
"No!" Amy brushed her hair over her ears. "Look, you've been misinformed. Feminism only means a belief in the political, economic, and social equality of women. A feminist is someone who holds that belief – who believes that women should have equal rights with others politically, economically, and socially. And I do. I don't believe I should be held back, or hold myself back, politically, economically, or socially, because I'm a woman."
"Oh," said Mary thoughtfully, and then chewed her food quietly for a moment. Afterwards she added, "So then I'm a feminist too."
Sheldon choked on his milk, but fortunately did not require the Heimlich maneuver.
"Well, it makes sense I would be", said Mary, "since that's the definition of feminism. After all, Shelly, now, when have I ever leaned back and let a man do something I could do myself?"
"Well, technically coit-"
"Sheldon!", Amy hissed, and Sheldon was narrowly prevented from discussing coitus at the dinner table. "This chicken is lovely," Amy added, and it was.
The rest of the dinner passed with much less tension than before, and they all had a delightful conversation about orchids; as it was also a very boring conversation to read about, however, we shall not mention it here.
