Fast and Free
Summary – The crew muses upon the once lost Captain Jack Sparrow.
Their first night abroad the ocean with fresh air and no trouble in site was the calm before the storm. Or so thought Elizabeth; who stood in the bow of the ship, looking behind and thinking behind. The past was rather interesting if you thought about it long enough.
For this was what she was doing. She was looking towards the past. The one memory that took her attention was the one kiss she shared with Captain Jack Sparrow. That man deserved it, she remembered thinking to herself. But, she did hate herself for doing it. But, what else was she supposed to do? She wondered if she could have threatened him with her sword, maybe that would have worked?
Not as well as kissing him though…she thought. Yes, she did the right thing. Than why was she so guilty over it? Why didn't she tell Will? He was going to be her husband, he never said the wedding was off. Only that they couldn't be married quite yet.
There were two lofty ships
From old England came
Blow high, blow low
And so sail we
One was the Prince of Luther
The other Prince of Wales
All a-cruisin' down the coast
Of High Barbary
Jack had been crooning for a while now, but the first few lines of the sea shanty was the first he had sung all that night. Surprisingly, he had a rather nice voice and it was calming to listen to him. Thought she didn't know why that feeling came upon her. She figured it was because she had made it square between them. Not all on her own, she couldn't have done that, but she did help.
That had to count for something!
"Aloft there, aloft there"
Our jolly bosun cried
"Look ahead, look astern,
Look to weather an' a-lee"
"There's naught upon the stern, sir
There's naught upon our lee
But there's a lofty ship to wind'ard
An' she's sailin' fast and free"
William Turner was dozing on deck, the soft sea breeze helped him to relax. He never relaxed now a days, there was too much to plan. Too much to think about, even now thoughts rolled about in his head and he had nothing to show for his thinking. Not one plan but that which he agreed on with Sao Fang back in Singapore.
He knew he was betraying everyone, including Jack. But, Jack didn't trust him anyway. And he was sure that he didn't trust Jack Sparrow. It was in Jack's nature to be a conniving bastard, but for him to turn like this…to become such a pirate that it made Jack smirk…well, it annoyed the hell out of him.
"Oh hail her, oh hail her"
Our gallant captain cried
"Are you a man-o-war
Or a privateer?" cried he
"Oh, I'm not a man-o-war
Nor privateer," said he
"But I am salt sea pirate
All a-looking for me fee"
Jack's song soothed him thought, made him quit thinking for a moment and made him marvel at the world around him. Being able to think about life in general and for a few precious moments, not to think at all.
Maybe that was why Jack turned to rum, to forget about his troubles and to have a few precious moments like that. Moments where he didn't have to worry about what turn his life might take on next.
For Broadside, for broadside
A long time we lay
'Til at last the Prince of Luther
Shot the pirate's mast away
"Oh quarter, oh quarter"
Those pirates they did cry
But the quarter that we gave them
Was we sank 'em in the sea
He had been given no quarter, not a one among them was willing to give it to him, and probably Jack had his own plans and wouldn't give them quarter either. It was a harsh concept, but a truthful one.
The End
