"You can't like a human." A stern voice spoke out against her.
"Why not?" Ahiru murmured quietly as she watched the dark haired, human male bend down by the water to scoop up a handful to drink.
"You are a duck. Before long, You'll be fully grown, and in search of a mate," Her mother spoke up, practically glaring at the human man by the water's edge as if he had committed a vile act against her just by living,
"He can't be my mate?" The young duckling asked as she nodded at the man.
"Humans and ducks don't mix." Her mother grumbled, and flew further away.
Ahiru pouted as she watched the man; was it really so wrong to love a human?
She swam closer to him, and he handed her a bread crumb that had previously found rest in his pocket,
Ahiru ate it, eagerly.
What goodies were he able to eat every day?
A dark haired woman ventured out from where he came from to cling to his arn, and pout while she whispered something to him.
The small duck remembered another reason why she couldn't have him; this vile woman already had him.
She watched them turn around and leave as the previously delicious bread settled like a rock in her stomach.
Her mother would have told her, "I told you so," so why was she so attached?
She leaned forward as if to get one more glimpse of the man.
He was everything that she wanted; the other ducks never intrigued her so.
She sighed; why would he notice a simple duck like her?
She nestled up on land to hopefully fall asleep where she could dream of being human for a while, so that she could have her love by her side with interest in his eyes for her.
How could he love that human woman that way?
