AN ~ Another test/preview-y thing for my AOS Divergent!AU. What do you think of the idea? What would you like to see (or not) in a Divergent!AU? Gathering ideas for my Camp Nano project
Fitz has never liked to gossip, but he does like the Erudite girl in the blue blazer. He likes the way her eyes light up whenever she has something to say. Abnegation girls didn't shine like that. They weren't allowed to, Fitz supposes.
The Erudite's a proper girl, but she seems to be enjoying the jostling at the table. She's smiling and laughing. It makes Fitz happy, despite the crowd making his ears buzz and his stomach twist. He did like how quiet Abnegation was.
He sighs, thinking of home. Thinking of his mother.
"Hey, Fitz!"
Her voice cuts through the crowd like a bell. She smiles at him from across the table. Dauntless clamber around her like carrion birds, tossing a ball of some kind around the lunchroom, but her eyes are only on him. Her light hair and blue blazer seem so bright, they almost make him forget the rest of the room full of people.
"It's Fitz, right?"
"Yeah. How did you know?"
"I notice things. Erudite." She gestured at the blazer with a little pout of embarrassment that seemed so childish to such a proper voice that he had to laugh.
"Don't feel bad. I like it. It suits you."
"Yeah, well. They're probably going to take it away tonight, so get your eyeful." She glanced down at it, and her expression became a little sadder. Fitz reached across the table and put his hand over hers. She flinched and he drew back.
"Oh, I'm sorry."
"No, it's okay, I just – I mean I thought Stiff- I mean Abnegations…Abnegation people? Didn't like to be touched?"
"Well I guess I'm not all Abnegation am I?"
There's a dark sparkle of curiosity in her eyes at that. It gives him pause. He should have said, "not really Abnegation". But he hadn't. And he doesn't mind that he didn't. He's not even sure he would mind if she knew. But just in case, he doesn't confirm.
She doesn't ask, either. Which is weird, for an Erudite. But maybe she's not all Erudite. His heart starts pounding harder at the thought. He can hear his heartbeat in his ears. Years of resisting the urge to ask questions send the words screaming to his tongue but before they can tumble out, a loud banging of metal on metal calls everyone's attention to the platform above them.
The female instructor who'd supervised their jumps stands mute beside a dark-skinned with an eye patch and a scar, and a gnarled veteran's posture. He introduces himself as Fury. He introduces the woman as The Cavalry. Fitz couldn't help but wonder why Dauntless had such bizarre titles. At least his was part of his real name, but The Cavalry?
"She used to be Amity," one of the Dauntless near him whispers. The Erudite's eyes light up again and she leans towards the Dauntless.
"She must be the only transfer in what, a century?"
They trade a few murmurs, but the loud welcome speech drowns most of it before it reaches Fitz' ears. He watches though, partly trying to lip read, and partly trying to recall if he's ever heard the Erudite give her name.
