Lullaby
Their mother's soft voice echoes throughout the alleyway. The young girl buries her face further into her mother's side, and her elder brother does the same on their mother's other side. Their little brother is fast asleep in their mother's arms, soothed by the lovely sound of their mother's voice. Her voice had begun to fade as she had reached the last line of the lullaby, and her head leaned backwards as one last exhale left her lips. Her children lay curled up to her side, unaware that anything is out of place. Their mud-covered faces are cleansed as the rain comes down harder, and their empty stomachs growl. The children sleep, though they are homeless, poor, starving, and now, motherless.
The young girl lifts her head from her mother's side, and blinks a few times, a yawn escaping her lips. She taps her elder brother's should to awaken him, but does not attempt to awaken her younger brother. The two shake their mother, attempting to awaken her. She doesn't move, and the daughter begins to worry. It isn't long before the eldest child declares her dead, and takes their younger brother from her arms. The heartbroken children walk from the alley, but at the last second the little girl takes the flower from her hair, and runs back to her mother. She places the flower in her mother's hands, and kisses her cheek. Then the little girl runs back to her elder brother, and they leave their mother's body behind.
The two children wander the streets, alternating who was carrying their baby brother. It feels to them as though they will never find a place to stay, but they continue. The elder brother has a look of determination on his face. He will not stop until his younger siblings are safe. His life revolves around them now; they are the reason he wakes up in the morning. The young girl stares silently at her sleeping younger brother, hoping only that they will find a home.
A car pulls up to the siblings, and the elder boy pushes his younger sister behind him. The man steps out of the car, and speaks. He makes an offer of food, water, shelter. It's almost too good to be true, and the elder boy questions him. Finally, he makes the decision that it's what his siblings need. He cannot protect them both by himself. But he can help to get them to a better life.
The children get into the car, and are taken from the streets by a man they do not know. A lullaby plays through their mind, their mother's voice, and they fall asleep, not caring of the dangers of the world.
