He had cheated on her.
By skimping out on cash and buying her a 25-cent, totally phony diamond ring from one of those cheap little vending machine things you find outside supermarkets.
Now she wouldn't have minded (much) if he'd given it to her on some random occasion, say Groundhog Day, for example.
But on November 5th? As in, the fifth day of November?
In your dreams, Mitani, you cheap bastard.
It'd been their one-year anniversary. 12 entire months of near unadulterated dating bliss. And he had to go screw it up with a present that screamed, " I don't really think you're worth enough to ponder my pretty little head over."
Ugh!
Akari stormed through the halls of Haze High, figurative clouds of steam pouring through her ears and her fired up brown eyes daring anyone to tell her to calm down.
One part-worried, part-frustrated, wholly frantic Mitani Yuuki was calling after her.
"Akari!" He said, chasing her down. "Wait!"
When he'd finally caught up to the raging girl, he stood firmly in her path to stop her, uncaring of the fact that he was causing a scene.
"Akari." He mumbled once more, putting a hand on her shoulder as he caught his breath.
She threw him a withering glare and bit, "What, Mitani?"
He slightly cringed at the way she used his surname instead of her usual, affectionate 'Yuu-kun.' Digging through the tabs he kept in his memory bank, a tone like that usually meant he was in for it.
Gulp.
He swallowed the nervousness in his throat, and along with it, his characteristic ego.
"Akari, I'm—" His fingers gripped her a little tighter because he knew he'd hurt her, "I'm sorry. I was stupid. Geez, I just—I didn't want you to think I was trying too hard or worrying over this or something—" She held in a laugh at his atypical mumbling.
"—I panicked!" He confessed, causing heads to turn in their direction.
"…And, I'm sorry, ok?" Their eyes locked, coffee irises on emerald, and in one shoujo-ish moment, she knew she'd forgiven him.
But that didn't mean she was going to leave him unscathed. She touched his cheek, shooting him a soft glare that ended up a smile, "Because I know how much that hurt you, your apology is accepted."
She then put her hands on her hips, "But to be fully forgiven you're going to have to make it up to me."
He nodded immediately and she giggled at his enthusiasm, "You have to take me out on a romantic date and…" she looked him up and down and despite the fact that they'd been dating an entire year, he fidgeted a fraction. "…you have to give me your belt."
A brow raised in suspicion, "Why my belt?"
Akari threw him a deadpanned stare that told him he didn't have the privilege of knowing. He grunted and pulled the leather from the loops. That's when he realized…
"Akari…no."
She smirked at him, "Yes, Yuu-kun." And she pulled at the buckle till it wound away from his hips. She kissed him lightly, muttering a giddy "Pick me up at 8" against his mouth.
As she drew away, she carefully pulled the leather around her waist so it hung loosely around her.
Her mood drastically changed, Akari skipped happily through the throngs of chattering bystanders, knowing her boyfriend had learned his lesson.
And that he had to walk, gripping at the waistband of his one-size-too-big pants for the rest of the day.
