Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter
"Evans, Petunia." McGongall called from her long scroll of first year students, lifting the sorting hat off the stool.
Petunia took a deep breath, smoothing out her uniform and her hair as she slowly walked up to the stage. It's going to be alright, Tuney. She remembered her sister's voice. You'll make lots of friends! And you can write me everyday and come home for Christmas! And pretty soon I'll get to go to school with you as well! She wished her sister were already here. She was the brave one after all.
Without realizing how she got there, Petunia was already sitting on the stool in front of all the other students and the hat was placed on her head.
"You have a sister?" The hat asked curiously.
"You can hear me?" Petunia gasped, clearly shocked that the hat was speaking to her.
"Of course I can!" The hat scoffed. "How do you think I figure out where you belong?"
What if I don't belong anywhere? Petunia thought to the hat nervously, not wanting the other students to hear her.
"Ahh, everyone belongs somewhere. Some students have so many qualities, they just have a bit of a harder time being sorted." The hat explained. "And don't worry, only you can hear me."
Petunia nodded, looking at the crowd nervously. Do you think I belong anywhere?
"Of course you do. Let's see. You're loyal to your sister, friendship and family are important to you. Hufflepuff might be a good choice. You're intelligent, maybe even cunning. Slytherin might be good as well..." He thought. "Nosy too, I see?"
I am not nosy! Petunia thought angrily. You're inside my thoughts! Doesn't that make you nosy?
The sorting hat chuckled and searched farther. "Clever. Another important quality. I'm only doing my job. It seems as though you're ambitious and self-perserved, although you do like to know other people's business."
Hey! Petunia thought again to the hat.
"Alright, alright. It seems as though you're a natural born leader." The sorting hat thought for another moment before shouting, "SLYTHERIN!"
Petunia smiled as the hat was lifted off her head and the students cheered. She slid off the stool and walked towards the Slytherin table, feeling as though she belonged. I can't wait to write to Lily! She thought to herself, beaming as she took a seat.
Author's Note: Hey everyone! I don't really know what made me think of this story, but I just thought it would be interesting. I don't know if it's been done before, I checked the Petunia/Sorting Hat tag and didn't see anything so I thought I'd write this. It just seemed like something interesting. Hope you liked it! Reviews would be lovely!
