Dan glanced at the ring one last time. "This isn't going to work." He muttered to himself looking at his cereal box then back at the ring. "This is stupid. Phil would never fall for something so dumb." But what if he loved it and it was actually a great idea? A voice in his head countered with happiness. "Here goes nothing..." Dan's smile was unsure as he slid the gold ring among the cereal. He heard Phil's bedroom door open and heard his footsteps tramp around the hallway.
Dan quickly folded the plastic cereal bag, then the cardboard box, replaced the box on the counter, then dove out of sight behind their kitchen island just as Phil walked into the kitchen.
Phil was slightly distracted with his phone so he didn't notice the nervous Dan hiding behind the island as he placed his phone on the island itself. Dan didn't breathe as Phil glanced around then picked up Dan's cereal box. Phil had one mouthful of cereal then another before his face contoured into a confused expression. He fished around in the depths of the box, even placed it on the opposite counter to make sure it didn't fall over as he dug. Dan took this moment to sneak to directly behind Phil.
At last, Phil hooked his slender finger around the metallic circle and pulled it out. In disbelief, he saw the gold ring for what it was. He squealed with excitement and nearly dropped it as he rubbed cereal dust and crumbs off it's polished surface. "Dan!" He yelled. He was about to go and search for Dan, but Phil turned and was greeted with a kneeling, smiling, and nearly crying Dan.
"Phil Lester, will you-" Dan began but was interrupted with a choked up chorus of "Yes! Yes! Yes!" Dan rose then let Phil hand over the ring and slid it onto Phil's pale left ring finger. They both gazed at it happily they into each others eyes; brown into green, blue, and yellow.
Dan put both hands on either side of Phil's face and kissed him deeply. Phil wrapped both lanky arms around Dan's waist and pulled him closer to him.
Phil then pulled away and whispered. "That was MUCH better than any velvet ring box." he nodded towards the now abandoned cereal box. Dan smiled.
"Yeah, I had help with the idea though." Thinking of the Tumblr post he found on the internet.
"Internet?" Phil assumed and Dan nodded with a chuckle. Phil rolled his eyes. "Well," he reconsidered. "Without the internet-"
"We never would have met." Dan finished in a familiar singsong tune.
