So im not the best writer here, most of my friends question if i am english because my english skills are so bad. But i love creating stories and i love my imagination. So i can't commit to a full story so heres is a one shot playing inside my head. Its Zutara mostly and inspired by the song If You're Not The One sung by Daniel Bedingfield. I do not own Avatar: TLA hope you enjoy my little ... thing (IDK) And i changed a few things... so if it doesn't follow the story word for word sorry :-/ Enjoy!

He knew. The day she offered to heal his scar, he knew that she was the one. He betrayed her. He hurt her. He was the Fire Lords son. Yet, after their trip to find her mothers killer, she showed friendship towards him, showed trust. She was beautiful, no doubt about that. She was powerful and strong-willed. They were opposites but somehow the both fit.

She knew. The day she forgave him, she knew that he was the one. She always hated that she had shown him her ability to blood-bend. She hated that she had shown him hatred. That she distrusted him. He deserved it, no doubt about that. He was handsome, he cared, he changed. He was fire and she water. But they fit.

Katara watched as Zuko and Azula fought. Zuko had the upper hand due to Azulas obvious madness. She willed him on, silently praying to anyone who was listening. She didn't see the lighting darting to her direction. Only the body the leaped in the way. Only the body that now looked lifeless on the ground. Her confusion turned into anger as she charged for Azula. The fight between fire and water was heated, and intense. But with Katara's determination to save Zuko, she won. She thought she was too late. She thought he had died. But after an eternity he responded to her healing. His thank you brought her to tears as he went back into unconscious. "I think it is I who should thank you." She whispers to his sleeping body.

She didn't move, Zuko using her as a pillow. She looked to the red sky, watching the comet fly past over her head. They could be loosing, they could have already lost. But right now her concern was to Zuko. Her soul felt glad, just sitting here with him. Before the sun went down, she spotted Appa. The group of kids all climbed down to help her with Zuko, to take him to a comfortable place. She healed her brothers foot and hugged a tried looking Aang. Iroh greeted them at the palace, worried for his nephew. But was reassured by Katara, as she told him he would be find after some rest. After a small dinner, she went to his room. He looked so peaceful sleeping there. She took his hand, surprised at how both their hands fit.

She wanted to. She wanted to tell him. She could feel that his heart returned her call for his. She knew they could be prefect. She felt lost at the thought of him dying by his sisters hand. But seeing him breath gave her the strength to stand and help him. But he needed a fire nation wife. He needed a fire bending child. The fact that the next fire lord could have a water bending child, would cause havoc. He would already be against most of his nation by siding with the Avatar, by changing many fire nation laws. There can't be another reason for him to have problems. Of course she didn't know what the future would bring, but its not going to be easy for him, even without her.

She was there at his coronation, a very happy day for many people. But not her. Since he got better, he gave her looks, he complimented her more, he was, well, flirting. She wanted to flirt back. She wanted to show her feelings to him. But he couldn't have a water bending wife. She grew sad, it started to show to some people through the past couple of days. After this she was going home, to her Grandmother and new Grandfather. To her tribe, to the ice and the cold. Far away from him. From his heat. Her head over ruled her heart. Her heart telling her that he was the one.

Zuko read her letter. He re-read it. And then he read it again. She had left. Her brother hadn't, nor had Aang. Toph even stayed, though she wanted to go home soon too. But she had gone. Left in the night, now too far away to be convinced to stay. He could go after her, but as the new fire lord, he couldn't just leave now. He hardly cried, ever since his mother left. But here he was, the new fire lord, crying on his bed. Her words were true. He wanted to fall in love with her. He believed he already had. And she loved him back. But she couldn't be his. He, the fire lord would need someone to give him fire-bending children. A water bender, as perfect as she is, would create twice as many problems for him. He wanted to scream that he didn't care. He wanted her to know that she... she... meant everything to him.

Throughout his meetings to make peace with the other nations, he always heard a whisper. Her name resounded in his head. He would also be seen staring out to the ocean, his mind obviously somewhere else. Everyone had left. Sokka and Suki had left for the northern water tribe by request of it's chief. Toph had left to make amends with her family. His uncle went to reclaim his tea shop, rightly so Iroh deserved it. Aang stayed the longest, but eventually left as there were plenty of things to do throughout the earth kingdom. Ty Lee, though he and her hadn't been friends really, had left with the Kyoshi Warriors. Mai couldn't stay. She still loved Zuko, but she could see he no longer loved her. The last Zuko had heard of her was that she had met a certain earth bender who had finally seen how bad his facial hair had got. Everyday he would wake up hurt, the distance she had put between them both maimed him. And every night he dreamed of her as his wife.

He had hoped she would be the one he would share hie life with. He wished she would be the one he would die with. He prayed she would be the one he would build a family with. He knew he would love her all his life. Because she was the one.

The year that followed Zuko's coronation showed much change to Katara's life. She had become a master. Well she was a master of water but now she taught it to the water benders of the Southern water tribe. Really it was just the kids who had moved from the north to the south, but give it a few years and she knew she would be training new water benders. In her spare time she helped with the rebuilding of the Water tribe. It started to look as breath-taking as the Northern Water kingdom. Sokka had been made chief of the Northern Water Tribe, due to the small relationship he had with Yue. It didn't make sense why, but he was happy. Master Pakku had brought his grandson, Kodi, to the Southern Water Tribe. Katara had asked her father to give Kodi the chance to be chief as, one: she didn't want it, two: he would have been her older brother (probably) if fate had chosen different and three: he was older than her and more experienced at running a kingdom. Her father had accepted but then also commented that he wasn't gone yet adding a friendly wink to his daughter trying to cheer her up.

Her thoughts, whenever left to think freely, always went to him. She got little bits of news by travellers, but she didn't really know how he was doing. She wanted to. She wanted to drop everything and go to him. To see him. To tell him it was a mistake to leave him. To return his love. Her place was here. Not with him. Tears fell from her eyes because she missed him. She missed his heat. She missed his fire. The thought of him took her breath away. Kodi stood beside her and lanced his hand into hers. He knew about Zuko. She needed a friend, someone to cheer her up and make her smile and he was that person.

Katara prayed every morning for the strength to carry on without Zuko. And every day her prayer was answered. And it came the form of Kodi.

During the same year Zuko had become quite the peace maker. He always thought- What would Katara do- and his answer seemed to have a good affect on his nation. He had heard of her success of becoming a master. He visited by Aang a few times, but only because he was on official Avatar business. Aang hadn't even seen Katara yet, not since she left. Zuko often tried to leave to see her, to see how she was doing. But something always came up. Someone always needed something. Something always needed his attention. Days like this made him regret leaving Ba Sing Se. Leaving his uncles tea shop. Days like this made him regret not telling her that he loved her sooner. He loved her. He didn't care if it was wrong or right.

He was walking through his mothers old gardens, looking like he did when he travelled with the gAang. Not many people saw him like this, like a boy rather than a fire lord. A hooded figure landed infant of him, a sharp knife pointing to Zukos heart. Zuko dodged it sending a fire blast towards the assassin. That combined with his screams of pain called the guards nearby to help him. His last thoughts, before blacking out, was of her. He couldn't be with her that night, but he hoped she knew that no matter what happened his heart would be by her side.

Katara woke up, her husbands arm over her waist and touching her swollen stomach. Her son, Keenan, was on her other side, caught in a dream. She could hear her daughters, Zuki, small breaths on her husbands side. 10 years. 10 years without Zuko. They were in the fire kingdom for Zuko. He had thought about an assassination attempt and had wrote that all his friends gather at his grave after 10 years. No one, not even his successor, knew why. Kodi had help her all through grieving over Zuko. He dropped everything to take her to his funeral. He held he hand as she cried and screamed at the spirits, cursing them telling them that is wasn't fair. He was by her side everyday since. It took months before Katara stopped crying herself to sleep. After two years he proposed to her and after three they had their now 7 year old girl, Zuki. Keenan came two years after that. Keenan was a water bender while so far Zuki had no bending abilities. Their third child was on its way soon.

She slipped away from her family and walked to where he was buried. Instead of being the crypt, he wanted to be on a hill, facing the sea. Yes his tomb was in the crypt but she knew his body was here. The gravestone simply said Zuko. How he was known to his friends. Katara whispered to the grave;

I miss you
You're love was so strong that it took my breath away
And I hold you
Into my heart and pray for the strength to stand today.

Then as a fiery whisper behind her she heard his voice:

I love you
Whether it's wrong or right
And though I can't be with you tonight
Know my heart is by your side.

The Water Queen and The Fire Lord stood at his gave and was lost in their love that should have been.

If you're not the one, then why?
