Today is Kurt Hummel's first day of middle school.

Despite his calm exterior and immaculate presentation, it is safe to say that Kurt is absolutely petrified. Sitting at the kitchen table, he finishes his cereal in complete silence, mulling over his thoughts about how today may turn out. All of a sudden his train of thought is broken as he looks up to see his Dad perched on the chair opposite his, Kurt's school bag placed in his lap.

"Hey Buddy!" his father says "Ready to go?"

Kurt nods and makes to get out of his chair before he feels his Dad grasp his hands to pull him into a hug.

"Kurt, I know today isn't gonna be easy, but trust me once it's over It'll all be okay."

"I know, Dad. Thanks."

Kurt reluctantly let's go of his fathers hold and runs over to the coat stand in the hallway to fetch his jacket, before walking slowly back to the kitchen to collect his rucksack from the table where his Dad had left it, while he was at the sink, putting the things they used at breakfast into the bowl. After quick goodbyes and another comforting hug, Kurt makes his way out of the door and starts his walk.

After around ten minutes Kurt arrives at a large set of gates, behind which is his new school. He takes in his surroundings carefully, he's been here before, of course, for the chance to look around and meetings where parents could ask about the school, but this time it was totally different. He looks around to see large numbers of people, many are young, like himself but several other look older, presumably they were parents.

He spent a while just simply observing and taking in his new environment and then made his way through the gates into the large courtyard. Glancing at his watch he saw that it had just turned 8am, which meant that he had another 15 minutes before the bell would sound to signal that school had started.

He started to walk around the courtyard debating about what he should do and after several minutes he settled on walking over to a beautiful cherry blossom tree, sitting down carefully on the pine bench placed underneath.

Many of the other children were playing, Kurt could see some engaged in games of tag, these groups mainly consisting of boys and small groups of girls busying themselves with hula hoops and skipping ropes. Kurt, however was quite content sitting on the bench, his feet stretched in front of him, his head resting on the back of the bench, humming a tune vaguely reminiscent of the many show soundtracks Kurt had listened to over the last few years.

All of a sudden he was snapped out of his reverie to see a boy seated next to him on the bench.

"Hello? Excuse me" the boy said quietly.

Kurt straightened up and turned to face him, evidently the time he'd heard him speak wasn't the first time he had tried to get Kurt's attention.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I was miles away; I didn't mean to ignore you"

"No, no. It's fine" The other boy replied, with a grin appearing on his face.

Kurt took a minute to look at the boy sitting next to him.

He was definitely smaller than himself, Kurt could tell from the way his feet were dangling slightly off the bench, not quite able to reach the floor. The next thing Kurt noticed was the boy's hair, a beautiful chocolate brown and unfathomably curly. He then turned his attention to the boys outfit. He was wearing tailored slacks, in a very deep navy held up by suspenders and a pristine white short sleeved shirt, finished off with a small red bowtie. Kurt had a particular eye for fashion and was thoroughly impressed by the mystery boys attire, a better attempt than most of the other boys in the courtyard, who were for the most part dressed in jeans and brightly coloured or patterned polyester t-shirts.

"Um…" The boy coughed slightly before holding his hand out. "I'm Blaine"

Kurt nodded and took the boys hand into a firm handshake.

"Oh..uh.. I'm Kurt."
